OCD

I am finding this cleaning company's name really offensive, very little I can do about it, but AIBU?

Are they the only cleaning company in your area?

DJBaggySmalls · 22/01/2017 12:29

You can talk to Companies House.

www.gov.uk/choose-company-name

DJBaggySmalls · 22/01/2017 12:31

It might be easier to talk to Trading Standards through the CAB website. They probably arent the right people to deal with it, but they will know who is.

ConvincingLiar · 22/01/2017 12:32

Check their marketing before getting upset. What if it's owned by Oliver Charles Davidson?

mummymeister · 22/01/2017 12:32

do the initials stand for something like orwells cleaning division or are they being deliberately goady?

I find quite a few names of companies offensive not least FCUK but as to what you do about them, no idea, other than perhaps writing into the letters page of your local newspaper and say why its offensive. if you feel strongly write to the company and explain your views.

FWIW this sort of "clever" name will invariably backfire on them at some point. you wouldn't call a disability aids company cripples would you?

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2017 12:36

No not the only cleaning company in my area, I wasn't going to use them anyway

its called OCD- oven, carpet and domestic cleaning

I am happy to be told I am being precious over this

And now just realised I am giving them publicity

Wow I just Googled to see of I could find them and there are 2 come up, one in Harrogate and one in Huddersfield. Is it one of those? Really shocking, it makes you wonder what some people are thinking! On the website there is no obvious explanation (I.e. initials)

Hoppinggreen · 22/01/2017 12:40

The one in Huddersfield is Organise, clean, declutter. I have met the lady who runs it a few times and she really nice but I really don't like the name.

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2017 12:43

No, its neither of those, so make it 3

OurBlanche · 22/01/2017 12:43

They're thinking that Oven Carpets and Domestic Cleaning is a bit of a mouthful.

My business name is long and I shorten it to initials informally... or I would be claiming to be a government department Smile

Sometimes things just are what they are! Who knows if they chose those initials as an ill informed joke. I'd rather assume they did NOT than get irate and offended for no reason. I am sure DSis (who has life impacting OCD) would think the same!

DanglyEarOrnaments · 22/01/2017 12:55

I strongly agree with you OP.

OCD is a debilitating condition which limits the quality of ones life and should not be used to promote a service or product in my opinion.

Theimpossiblegirl · 22/01/2017 13:06

I agree, a cleaning company should not be making light of mental illness.

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2017 13:16

This was my feeling on it, if like others have suggested it was just an unfortunate combination of initials, then I would skate past it.

NickMyLipple · 22/01/2017 13:25

I've seen OCD advertised on facebook in West Sussex. I'm pretty sure I also read that it's nothing to do with obsessive compulsive disorder. Same one?

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2017 13:45

West Sussex isn't far from us (hampshire/surrey border) but I would be surprised if it was the same one

OP posts:
OurBlanche · 22/01/2017 13:51

I've just searched here, there are 3 within 50 miles, none mentioned here already.. One-off Deep Cleaning Services is one, Ovens, Carpets Domestic is another.

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2017 14:13

When people say I am a bit OCD, or I need a clean, like an OCD sort of a clean, I normally pull them up on it.

I find it upsetting that so many people seem to think using a mental health issue is the norm for naming a company.

There's a fantastic shop in Cambridge for electric guitars, amplifiers, etc. It's called Professional Music Technology. That’s right: it's called PMT.

OurBlanche · 22/01/2017 14:36

sobeyond the truth is t hat regardless of whether or not they are doing it deliberately they aren't breaking any law.

You can be offended, that is your right. But your being offended won't make it necessary for them to change the current, legitimate name of their company.

You have to change how you see it, or rather how you don't see it. Or it will continue to irritate you, making your life less pleasant for no reason at all!

Mumof That's a national chain, so there is PMT on many high streets and PMTOnline for some sofa shopping Smile

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2017 14:59

I completely agree that me being offended won't make a bit of difference.

I wouldn't say I am irritated, I am annoyed at how others still view mental illness, that does piss me off.

However it is a Sunday afternoon and I am being forced watching paw patrol, for another 15 minutes then I am turning social media off and going to walk the dog with batman and batdog

I am annoyed at how others still view mental illness, that does piss me off. Remind yourself that you don't know this for sure. The name could be a coincidence. You may not currently believe it but it could be....
