AIBU?

To think Anakin Skywalker is the most tedious character in the history of film?

DS(10) has inflicted a Star Wars marathon on us for the last few weekends. The old Star Wars, 4,5 and 6 were harmless hoakum, much enlivened by the lovely Harrisson Ford; Episode 1 was okay, (Liam Neeson is my favourite Jedi). But last nights Episode 2 and tonight's 3 are just dire.

Anakin is whingey, arrogant, humourless and creepy. His love scenes with Padme are like they were written by someone who has never actually spoken to a member of the opposite sex, let alone had a relationship. And his scenes with Ewan McGregor are not much better.

The actor is just so so poor. DD(17) and I are just sitting here cringing. DH has gone to sleep. DS is loving it. Sad

Well, he is kind of like that deliberately - the prequels are a trilogy about an essentially really unlikable person. He is Darth Vader you know, it makes sense that he was a whiny little controlling neckbeard in the beginning and eventually chokes his pregnant wife to death 😊

Ladybirdtinselturd · 21/01/2017 21:01

It is purposeful to be a stark contrast for when he evolves to Vader. You are being unreasonable to even acknowledge those three films exist, never mind watch them.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/01/2017 21:03

Hmm, I thought the whole idea was that he was a lovely boy, horribly manipulated and turned to the dark side by the evil Palpatine. He's not a lovely, tragic boy though, he's an awful little shit.

You need to watch if for the sand bit...

'I hate sand. It's...rough...and...course....and it gets everywhere!!' 😂😂

He's awful. Those films are awful. DP and I sometimes watch them with wine to have a proper piss-taking laugh about it Grin

MadHattersWineParty · 21/01/2017 21:05

Argh! *coarse

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/01/2017 21:14

Ha watched that bit last night Hatter. The flower strewn meadow bit was shockingly bad...Padme's outfit alone. And the dialogue.....

Ah yes, the 'mini-break' in Naboo Grin

I LOVE Natalie Portman but the bit in ROTS when he's murdred all the kids and they see eachother at the lava-set and he's a wanker and she says 'Anakin you're breaking my heart!' Cringe.

Think you just need wine OP!

gabsdot · 21/01/2017 21:55

I watched all 7 stare wars films over Christmas. The actor who plays Anakin is terrible but he didn't have much to work with. The dialogue. my ears, AARRGGHH!!!!
"I'm going to be the most powerful Jedi....ever", FFS.

In hindsight the young Anakin from PM was too nice. He really should have been torturing animals or something. You don't end up being Darth Vadar unless you're a bit of a psychopath.

Ewan and Liam were great though,

gabsdot · 21/01/2017 21:57

And Padme had far too many costume changes.

Bit of trivia, the decoy queen was actually Keira Knightly. There is a whole website where Star Wars fans try to figure out which scenes are Keira and which are Natalie.

dingdongdigeridoo · 21/01/2017 21:59

It's a shame because his back story could be really interesting. They should go back and redo the prequels one day because they are hideous.

OldBooks · 21/01/2017 22:03

Such wasted potential. Could have been a fascinating study of the corruption brought by power, the appeal of absolutism and how doing the wrong thing for the right reasons never works. But with laser sword fights. Instead we get the most improbable love story (what does she see in him? She is meant to be intelligent, well educated etc) awful dialogue and stupid death (really? Broken heart?)

amispartacus · 21/01/2017 22:12

Ja Ja Binks.

Need I say more.

Mrsfrumble · 21/01/2017 22:25

I feel a bit sorry for the actor. The script and direction is so very bad that even Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor come across as flat and clunky, and we know from other films that they are actually both great actors. Unfortunately being in the prequels ruined Hayden Christensen's career so we don't have any other films to judge him by.

I agree with OldBooks about wasted potential. The films could have explored Anakin's underlying anger issues resulting from growing up in slavery and how he was badly failed by the Jedi Council as well as his corruption by Palpatine, but it just gets lost with all the politics, space battles and CGI.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/01/2017 22:25

Padme's childbirth scene is utterly bizarre, and she has the smallest baby bump ever considering the mahoosive twins she gives birth to.

DS has gone to bed now all happy. He has spent the whole film regaling us with "interesting" facts about the various planets and aliens, gleaned from his many Star Wars tomes. Slightly worried now that he is going to grow up to be "comic store guy" or similar.

Mrsfrumble · 21/01/2017 22:32

What has always bugged me about last film is WHY DOES PADME CLEARLY NEVER SEE A DOCTOR?? I mean, all that advanced technology, and no one knows she's carrying twins? Imagine if, when plagued by nightmares about his wife's impending death in childbirth, instead of selling his soul to a Sith Lord, Anakin just took her to see an obstetrician? Very silly.

CactusFred · 21/01/2017 22:35

I'll take him over JaJa Binks any day.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/01/2017 22:40

It's all a bit Yuchi though. Padme is what, 20 in Episode1? And Anakin is about 8. Surely she could never fancy him as an adult. If the sexes were reversed we'd all be horrified.

The actor who played Anakin is Hayden Christensen...if you check out Higher Ground and Shattered Glass, you will see he is actually a phenomenal actor!

It was the movie that sucked!

amispartacus · 21/01/2017 22:46

I give you:

QueenLaBeefah · 21/01/2017 22:48

I just pretend those 3 films just never happened. They were just unbelievably dire.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 21/01/2017 22:48

I do want to say though that Star Wars was my very first cinema experience at the age of four, just after Christmas in 1977. So I have a soft spot for it...and can't WAIT to see Rogue One!!

OneWithTheForce · 21/01/2017 22:48

YANBU He is woeful.

And his scenes with Ewan McGregor are not much better.

Well, Ewan was in them so they were never going to be good. Obi Wan has to be the dullest character in the whole thing.

Obi Wan is very dull isn't he? I always assumed it was because Ewan McGregor was doing that stilted, stick up the arse, Alec Guiness impression. But maybe he's just dull.

Where would the who Star Wars franchise be without Harris Ford though? No many ways his charisma has carried the whole thing.

Last I actually burst into tears at the end of Rogue One. My family were mortified.

amispartacus that's funny Grin

chanie44 · 21/01/2017 23:16

Padme and anakin are so unbelievable as a couple. He tells her that he has slaughtered men, women and children as revenge for his mothers death and she's fine with it!!!!
