AIBU?

to be offended by these comments about the area I live in?

I live in an area that is thought to be a bit rough. The reputation was perhaps warranted at one stage (15 years ago it was a bit dodgy) and some areas of the estate are not desirable although speaking as someone who lives here there aren't any parts that are particularly no-go after dark etc.

Someone I know has gone on Facebook to make a joke that the estate is going to be destroyed by fire and another person has commented on the post to say they really hoped so. Both these people like to think of themselves as comedians so they probably think they are being hilarious but quite frankly I've had enough of the comments.

This is the place I have chosen to live in and raise my children in because it's a nice community with lovely neighbours (they both know I live here through choice) and I am sick of the comments about it. I don't think I'm being precious.

Tbh I don't know what I want people to say to this, I clearly just know some moronic people.

Do they know you live there

YANBU - that kind of sneery 'humour' is thoughtless and snobbish.

OP ' they both know I live here'

Mute 'do they know you live there?'

Can you ignore them? Sometimes people say these things for a reaction.
It's your life live where you want to.
Everybody is different. Personally I live in the middle of nowhere. I love it. It's a very quiet safe place to live. I wouldn't like to live in a busy city. Saying that I wouldn't judge you because you chose to live where you do

Yanbu. I live in an ex council house and it really annoys me when people make sweeping statements about the estate. Lots of lovely people live here from all walks of life.

Probably thoughtless rather than intentionally nasty, but not nice. Fwiw, I know some truly horrible people who live in naice areas Grin

They both think it's funny I'm sure. They definitely know where I live and both know I like it. They are not the first people to make offensive comments. I am currently sitting on my hands (well not literally obviously) so as not to reply.

I love where I live and I love my neighbours. I can stand the attitudes people have to my home. It's so offensive.

Thank you for replies. :)

I bumped into a childhood friend not long ago.
She has moved away from our childhood area and asked where i was living.
I am on a main road within walking distance of an ex council estate.
She replied that where I live is rough because she assumed j am living in this estate.

The irony is that we both grew up in council housing!

I think some people have no tact.

I've just moved out of an area with a dreadful reputation. I had 18 years of happy safe living there, in fact when my front door frame warped we didn't lock the doors for the last 10 years.
I'm quite well spoken, and people often commented that I don't sound as if that's where I live!

I won't react to it, I just want to. I've actually had people laugh at me when I've said I like living here because they don't believe me. Even if my community was a shithole how is it okay to make offensive comments knowing I can see them?!

Thank you for the support all. Smile

I live in an ex-council flat in south London. My god, some of the comments... It's a great litmus test for wankers though.

You're right about that, Essential. I'm surprised by how much this offends me tbh because I know it's not really about me, it's about these people and their snobby attitudes. I guess I'm just sick of it. I like living here, my DCs love it and are happy here, and I'm tired of defending myself.

Ha, I could've written your post OP.
I bought this ex council house and do honestly really like it here! It's the only place I've lived where I know all my neighbours names, the kids call for each other, and I feel safe!

I get the same OP. I mention where I live and people say "oh" or look down, a couple even apologised.
The area used to be quite bad but in the last 15 years it has completely turned around and is a lovely place to live.
It really annoyed me the other day when a friend asked a policemans advice about if she should buy a house round here and the policeman said "if you want your door kicking in". Checked the crime rates and they are well below average and one of the lowest in the town we live. But how can the area recover when even the police are giving out the wrong information Hmm

I grew up on an estate on the border of another "rough" area of an otherwise naice town. When people find out where exactly I lived I often get comments about how you'd never be able to tell from my accent or how I behaved, congratulations on not having a youth offending record or having been a teenage mum and not being "dole scum" etc despite my council house and single mother Hmm there is a lot of crime and poverty but I fail to see how I deserve to be praised for not "conforming" to an offensive and largely untrue daily mail stereotype Angry

I live in a city that people enjoy being rude about (including BIL who is from there). It suits us and we're happy here.
Ignore the wankers. Someone will always think they live somewhere 'better' than you.

We live in an ex council house, and MIL was a bit snobby when we bought it. We looked on the crime map and found their street had far more incidents than ours Grin Some people make comments but we have a good sized house in a safe friendly area near good schools and a big park and walking distance from the town centre - I love it!

Sorry for not coming back..

I meant is there any truth in their judgements? Maybe that's why it upsets you?

I couldn't deal with shit like that so I would block them. But I'm petty Blush

Report
TaliDiNozzo · 19/01/2017 09:42

Clearly not, Waitrose. But even if there was, going on Facebook and saying you wish it would burn down would be disproportionate I think, especially when you know it can be seen by someone who lives there.

Honestly if there was any truth to it I wouldn't be so eager to live here myself.
