I have a horrible cold and am booked in for induction (first baby) next Friday (2nd)

I know it sounds daft but I can't stand the idea of having to be in labour and having this cold (which is impacting my breathing)

Please someone tell me how I get rid of this thing before next week??

Drink plenty of Orange juice and take regular paracetamol...what my dr mate says is the most effective at speeding up getting better with a cold.

Good luck for your induction :)

Lots of vit C - we enjoy effervescent tablets in hot water here. Stop eating added sugars if you can; eating junk food in general doesn't help your immune system! Plenty of rest and happy thoughts. :)

Can you ask your GP/midwife whether any decongestants can be taken alongside the drugs involved in the induction? I know they are not recommended in pregnancy, but perhaps you can take some seeing that the baby is about to make an exit?

P.S. I really feel for you - stuffed nose and labour all at once is just horrid.

Is it actually a cold? I was really congested at the end of my pregnancy, from talking to other pregnant women and some stuff online I discovered it can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia. Check in with midwife, so if it is just a cold you can find out what you can take to relieve symptoms and if not you can be cared for properly. Take care.

I had an awful cold on my due date that developed into an ear infection.
I used as much steam as possible so got a massive mixing bowl and filled it with boiling water then put my head over it with a towel over my head and breathed in the steam for 10 mins. Did it 3 times a day and also has a lot of hot showers. I'm not sure it made the cold go away more quickly but it made me feel better. Also lots of apples and fresh fruit and spicy food. Also keep airing your house and change your sheets.
I reckon you'll be fine by next week. Good luck

I had a horrendous chest infection when I went in to labour with Ds2. Almost completely forgot about it once I was in the throes of labour.

You've got a week of rest, lots of vit c and water. You'll feel much better this time next week.

During pregnancy I had the worst horrible cold and couldn't take anything for it really. Boil ginger for 10 mins, add honey and lemon and drink a few times a day, it doesn't taste great but it honestly works wonders!!! It was the only thing that helped me during pregnancy!! Good luck with the induction! xx

Thank you everyone - you're all brilliant

ps. It's definitely a cold. And also reassuring to know that even a chest infection falls by the side in the throws of labour - helps me feel a little less sorry for myself! Smile

I don't think you'll notice the cold once you're in labour!

I had a bad cold when I went into labour and as other have said I didn't really notice it too much! So don't worry. Coughing with stitches was another matter however Confused

I had a cold when I was induced! Ask for paracetamol and stay really hydrated. You'll be uncomfortable but it'll pass. Good luck!

I had a terrible cold for the last couple of months of pregnancy, very blocked sinuses but found breathing in labour fine.

Lemon, honey and ginger. Lots of rest! Download some boxsets, put your feet up and chill. Go to bed early where you can. And so long as you're not shivering, keep a window open as the cooler air can help you feel less stuffy.

You can always ask for your induction to be moved back until the Monday to give you more time to get over the cold. Xx
