AIBU?

To think this is a ludicrous amount of salt for a child's meal

A friend told me Wetherspoons children's meal of sausage, beans and mash contains 13.4g of salt. That's over double an adult daily recommended intake. I checked it out on their website and it's correct. Aibu to think this is awful, surely there is a lower salt alternative for a children's menu?!

It's probably got more sugar than that. Hand on heart if I was worried about salt or sugar, wetherspoons wouldn't be in my top 500 places to eat. Even if there were only 500 places to eat.

Well beans and sausage are not known for their health appeal! Yummy though.

I think you're on a hiding to nothing expecting decent food from Wetherspoons.

But salt actually doesn't worry me too much.

I actually didn't believe that amount but I googled and it's right. 19g of sugar too Shock

Wetherspoons is not on my list of usual choices either but I was fairly aghast at this. I know sausage, beans and mash isn't the healthiest anyway but that's pretty shocking.

19.3g salt and 9.8 sugar but it's with peas not beans which is why the sugar is lower.

And there is gravy so that will explain some of the increased salt content.

I thought baked beans were good for you?

For a one off meal out I wouldn't worry about it. If you eat there on a daily basis, that's a different matter.
Do you know what the salt and sugar content is if the food you eat at home?

That's so high it has to be inaccurate. It would be unpalatable with 2 teaspoons of salt in it.

That's a very good question actually.

I personally have no clue how much salt/sugar is in the meals I cook from scratch.

Your average school dinner won't be far off this

I am very conscious of salt content (not quite so much with sugar but still keep a vague note) and cook from scratch so I usually do know pretty much exactly what is in my meals.

I would have said it had to be inaccurate at that level but the adult meal is very similar so I'd be inclined to believe it and the sausage mash and peas in the kids menu also says over 12g of salt.

Are you kidding? That's a months worth if salt from a school meal

that's why they taste like shit and even dogs won't eat them

What is an average school dinner though and what is your source?

I'd be very interested to know because I eat probably 3 or 4 school dinners per month, and they taste very bland for my pallet as though there's hardly any salt in them at all.

I do monitor salt consumption in our family. It is something I am more aware of as I have kidney problems. However, while I would have previously been inclined not to worry about salt my when my DD has an occasional kids meal when we are out, the level of salt in this is quite shocking. I would order for her from the kids menu and not think too much about it, but at 18 months I'm sure she should not be having more than 1g per day of salt. I would never have dreamed it was so much - I take back everything (almost) I ever said about Jamie Oliver!

2g per day is the recommended max aged 1-3. To be fair to Wetherspoons their pasta dishes aren't too bad salt wise and it is good that they actually provide the info for people to look at. I'm just not sure how many people actually look at it. I'm nosey so I always check if it's available on the odd occasion we go to a chain restaurant.
