To not know whether to report it

DD has a friend (14) who is looking like a compulsive liar but now it has turned serious as she is making accusations about one of her friends sexually assaulting her a couple of years ago. These are definitely not true as she's admitted it to DD. So far she has only made these accusations to DD. She has said things about her parents hitting her and stuff but then says they're not true.

I was wondering if I should hang fire to see what happens or is there anything else I can do? I'm taking a note of all conversations. I'm just worried this escalates into a serious false accusation against someone in the future.

The fact that she says to your dd they are not true doesnthat mean they are not, iyswim. Of course, they could be untrue as you suggest.

I think I would lay it all bare in front of some one in authority at the school and they can deal with it as they see fit.

I would be more worried that it is true and the little girl is having a hard time reporting it.

Thanks for that. I would be 99% certain that it is untrue as there are so many other instances of lies over the past few years. But then again, there is always the 1% chance, it's true but that's why crying wolf in the past can make things very difficult to believe.

Whether or not these things are true, your dd's friend does not seem to be a happy young woman.

You could talk to the safeguarding officer / pastoral support at the school, and see if they are able to give her any support and a chance to talk.

Please say something. A family member reported a young lad for rape. She made it up for attention. That poor kid went through hell and back until she admitted her lies.

She could be habitually lying because she's working through a trauma like abuse. Report it.

Sometimes a kid being abused "tests" the accusation by saying it to see what the reaction is and to get it out then says it's a lie so they don't have to face the consequences. I would report to a pastoral team at school if possible so they can keep an eye out.
