AIBU?

Is this selfish of me?

without going into detail to much I want to treat myself to a cosmetic procedure nexto year that would cost around 4 grand.
My aim is to save half and put the rest on a credit card.
I am a single mum to one dd and work part time and so to save the full amount would take more than a year.
I guess I'm posting on here as I feel selfish that I could be spending that money for a holiday for my dd instead or home improvements but I never treat myself or put myself first and dd never goes without.
is this selfish of me and would you be happy sticking 2 grand on a credit card?
I don't earn a fortune but we get by.
The reason I ask about the credit card is that I hate being in debt and most I've ever had on them is 500 so im a bit nervous about sticking 2 grand on there.
To save fully would take about 2 years and I really don't want to wait that long.

It's your choice if you want the treatment, however I think as it's non essential you should save and wait till you have the money upfront. Putting it on credit cards is risky if your financial situation changes suddenly.

What you do with your money is your choice but personally putting a non essential £2000 on a credit card I would say is pretty ill-advised!

Would this cosmetic procedure have a profound effect on your wellbeing?

Some would argue that the money could be spent on a holiday for you and dd which would bring you both lots of joy and memories. Or on home improvements which will increase the equity in your home and increase day to day living.

However if the procedure is one which will have a greater impact on your day to day well being and self esteem then go for it.

It depends on what the procedure is and why you are getting it done.

It depends on the procedure, really.

I wouldn't be worried re the home improvement / holiday side but I would be concerned about the debt on credit cards.

What's the procedure? I don't think £4K gets you much these days.

Liposuction, nose jobs, or veneers cost more than that.

Don't put £2K on your credit card for any non essential reason. Honestly, in the current uncertain economic climate that is a really bad idea. Your circumstances would not have to change much for that to push you financially over the edge, it really is not worth it. When you have a dependent child then yes, I think it is selfish to risk their financial security for something inessential. If you had saved all the money, it would be up to you how you spent it & selfish wouldn't come into it.

£2000 is a lot to put on credit cards and could result in a lot of interest being paid if it's going to take you a year + to pay it back. You'd need to be fairly savvy and take out a new credit card with 0% interest for 6 months fr example and then switch to another that offers interest free balance transfers. Personally I wouldn't do it until I had the money but only you know truly how important it is to you

Would the procedure have a health benefit?

If not, then yes in my opinion you are being selfish and unreasonable.

happyandsingle · 13/11/2016 08:43

the procedure would give me more confidence but obviously it's non essential in the fact it's not a life or death situation if I have it done.
I've not started to save yet because of Xmas coming but aim to start from Jan next year.

Save the money first, madness to put anything non essential on a credit card if you're only working part time and are a single parent.

Could you get more hours at work or a second job to save up quicker?

I don't think it matters what the procedure is, it's obviously important to you. I just don't think 2k of debt that will take you two years to clear is the right way to go about it.

If it's purely cosmetic then I think it would be wrong to go into debt.

If it's a nose job, then maybe you can get it on the NHS?

If it's a boob job then your DD matters a lot more than having big tits.

I wouldn't call it selfish, I'd call it risky. Can you work out how much it would actually cost you once you add in any interest you would pay while you pay it off before you make any decision.

Also the cost of any time off work, extra Childcare.

I also assume this is all your savings so you won't have a buffer in case something goes wrong in the meantime.

Think really carefully and check out any other options available

Personally I wouldn't do it on a credit card. I would save for longer.

I don't think it's selfish though. Risky doing it on credit cards but spending that on yourself if you genuinely think it will be good for your well being go for it. Just not on credit cards.

I'm already doing all the overtime at work I can but with no help from her dad and very little support elsewhere it's not easy.

Save up until you can afford it. Don't put it on a credit card.

It's a boob job isn't it?

Report
rollonthesummer · 13/11/2016 08:54

No-I wouldn't do it unlesss I had the money first. Risking your financial security for bigger boobs (or similar) doesn't sound like. Great plan.

I would not be of work for more than a week.
Had to have a big op last year and could only afford to take 2 days of work.
Being a single parent sucks sometimes.

"I don't earn a fortune but we get by"

Save if you want it that badly.

Putting £2k on a credit card is madness.

What if you lost your job / had to cut your hours / serious sick leave etc...

no its not a boob job I can say that much.
