My husband & I are separated & I have taken out an injunction against him after a nasty turn of events at the weekend.

I recently stayed in a hotel which he found the name of. He then phones said hotel who give him my email address (which he didn't know) & my home address (which he didn't know).

AIBU to want to rip them a new one ?

Awwlookatmybabyspider Wed 09-Nov-16 12:31:11

Fucking hell definitely not no.
Surely confidentiality data protection and safe guarding rules apply to every one including hoteliers.

jayisforjessica Wed 09-Nov-16 12:31:53

I don't think you're BU. The hotel has no right to give out your personal details.

He may have got around them by saying he's your husband, but... I mean if I were a bloke I could have called up and said the same thing, couldn't I? Did they verify it at all? What proof did he offer? And did they not stop to think that as your husband, he should HAVE that information, and if he doesn't, something is clearly amiss?

I'd be putting in a formal complaint if it were me. They need to have a reminder about privacy as it pertains to their paying guests.

They've broken the Data Protection Act.

harderandharder2breathe Wed 09-Nov-16 12:38:26

Yadnbu, that's a serious breach of data protection

When you complain, do tell them the effect/potential effect this has had, they should take that into account when resolving it

BorpBorpBorp Wed 09-Nov-16 12:44:03

That's incredible, I can't believe they divulged that information. That's a really basic thing and the staff should be hauled up for it.

FleurThomas Wed 09-Nov-16 13:20:39

They broke the dpa. Take legal action.

TheCatsMother99 Wed 09-Nov-16 13:22:11

Woah!!! That's terrible, they've breached data protection.

Them giving out personal details could have awful consequences.

Mynestisfullofempty Wed 09-Nov-16 13:24:15

OP who told you this had happened, the hotel or your husband?

Mummyme1987 Wed 09-Nov-16 13:27:04

Report to the ico.

user1478545823 Wed 09-Nov-16 13:36:13

My husband told me & showed me the copy of the invoice that they emailed him.
I have contacted the hotel today & explained the very unsafe position I am now in and I am waiting to hear back.

user1478545823 Wed 09-Nov-16 13:36:53

he sent a screen shot of it

Spam88 Wed 09-Nov-16 13:38:33

Report it to the Information Commissioner.

Landoni112 Wed 09-Nov-16 13:39:37

They have have broken the law.
You need to see a copy of their policies and see that members of staff are disciplined.
I would think you could sue for moving costs and emotional stress.

Mummyme1987 Wed 09-Nov-16 14:09:48

i would see a solicitor about protecting you.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch Wed 09-Nov-16 14:18:05

Report to the Information Commissioner at once.

In a previous workplace, a husband phoned up and checked details on his wife's insurance were correct.

He did not have permission to access the account, but was told the info anyway, as he had his wife's name and DOB.

He went to his wife's house and murdered her. He was abusive and she had fled to a secret address, which the insurance company happily gave him.

Please report it to the IC, the information they gave out could have put your life at risk.

OurBlanche Wed 09-Nov-16 14:19:14

Oh dear! They are in a heap of trouble.

Spam and Landon are right, gather information, report to chain and IC, long, loud complaint.

I hope you are OK! Good luck

Mummyme1987 Wed 09-Nov-16 14:26:53

Hasn't he broken the injunction? Can you report him to the police?

RaspberryOverloadTheFirst Wed 09-Nov-16 14:26:54

I hope you are OK, an agree about complaining loudly. ICO, and don't let the hotel get away with minimising this. They really need to acknowledge they've fucked up badly.

Awwlookatmybabyspider Wed 09-Nov-16 14:33:30

Coffee, that's awful. shock.
Op kick up a stink. A huge stink. Like the poor lady coffee was telling us about. The next person may not be as fortunate.

AyeAmarok Wed 09-Nov-16 14:37:58

They really are not allowed to do that, unfortunately, whoever was on the end of the phone has massively fucked up.

MrsTerryPratchett Wed 09-Nov-16 14:45:15

Have you spoken to the Police about it?

The hotel have messed up totally. And they are not normally like this. My ex used to stay in hotels all the time for work. When I would legitimately try to get hold of him they were always very cagey. Rightly so.

ConvincingLiar Wed 09-Nov-16 14:50:32

Did he do this before or after the injunction? If it was in force of report him to the court or the police for breach. I would report the hotel to the information commissioner.

scampimom Wed 09-Nov-16 14:58:22

When did he tell you about it? And how? (as in, in what manner - taunting, matter-of-fact etc, not "via email" I mean)

ToffeeForEveryone Wed 09-Nov-16 15:04:23

Information Commissioner's Office hotline: 0303 123 1113

Definitely report them. Completely out of order.
