To ask what is wrong with my central heating

Shamelessly posting here for traffic in the hope someone has had the same problem...

Moved into a new build last year and now having a problem with our central heating.

The heating and hot water is on schedule to be on throughout the day, it is coming on for say an hour and then the radiators just start to go cold even though the timer is still lit up as on.

If i then reset it to come back on again they just dont heat up again for a couple of hours. THis is the same if I put it on the "on" mode which, in theory, should turn it on and keep it on.

Thermostat is only at 21.

Cheers

Sounds like you might have an air block to me. Have you tried bleeding the radiators?

Are your actual radiators turned down really low? Have you 'bled' the actual boiler? On ours the pressure sometimes drops/raises and we have to regulate it for it to come back on.

Ours is a combi and normally tells us if that happens.

Ours will turn itself off if it's thinks the air has hit the temperature on the thermostat. So if it still feels cold and the radiators have gone off, I turn the thermostat up. Or I move the thermostat to a colder part of the house, because we never had ours screwed to the wall.

It sounds like it thinks the house is warm enough. What happens if if you turn the thermostat up? My thermostat is set at 18 and heats the flat to 21, maybe yours is the other way around and has to be set at (for example) 24 to heat it to 21.

Alternatively, are there thermostatic valves on each radiator that are shutting them off at a low temperature?

Do you have thermostatic valves on the radiators (must do on a new build)? If they are on 2/3 they will go off earlier than a radiator where the thermostatic valve is turned to 5/6/Max? My husband never understands this (even though I explain it to him every year!). As a pp poster said, maybe turn up the temp to 25 or something and see if they turn back on.

What is the actual temperature of the room (not using the thermostat)?

If it's a new build you should be covered under your house guarantee for problems? I think.

We're in a new build and have to address the pressure on the boiler. You should have a gauge on your boiler from 0-5. It should be at about 2 but they sometimes drop to near 0. There'll be a black know/dial thing next to it. Turn it 90 degrees (it'll make a hissing noise) until the pressure increases to 2 and then turn the dial back to where it was.

Thanks all for the replies, we got hit with the snow last night so was good timing for it to start playing up.

The radiators arent on a low heat, theyr acrually up at 4 mostly so the higher setting.

This is the same for the gauge on the boiler.

The theories about the thermostat seem to make sense in that when its getting to the right heat its kicking it off - that make senses and would be fair. But after a few hours the temp has definitely dropped and so I aoild expect it be kicking back on again but this jsnt happening.

I reset the timer last night and it came on fine, also came on fine on schedule overnight.

Iv dug out the warranty for it so will try giving them a call today to see if we can get someone out for a look. Also thinking about just taking out a service package and get someone external to give it all a once over.

Thanks everyone

Have you checked the air gap in the hot water cylinder?

Too low or too high (can't recall which way round) can cause issues. May need redoing. Youtube will have a video for it if you search by make and model.

Set the timer to "on" and the thermostat to maximum. What happens?

It should come on.

What kind of thermostat do you have?
