To not search for this?

DH has just called asking me to search for some paperwork he needs. He had a slight accusing tone as he says he cannot find it after I moved some papers yesterday. I had a quick look while he was on the phone but can't see it. He wants me to do a thorough search but I can't be bothered!

By way of background he is forever leaving stuff lying around. He leaves mail piled up and unopened for months etc. So a few times I have accidentally thrown out things of his. Not on purpose but I will tidy up and a letter or something will get caught up in the puke of paper I throw in the recycling. Or he will leave a key on the kitchen counter which I will inevitably move out of my way and then when he wants it neither of us know where it is.

He gets annoyed with me about this but I maintain if he didn't leave things around it wouldn't happen!

AIBU? I have no recollection of seeing his paperwork and really can't be arsed turning the house upside down looking for it.

I type this while looking at a laundry basket full of laundry he hasn't bothered to put away for 3 weeks now angry

Just say you looked and can't find it. But if he really needs it, then why not help him?

He should really take better care of things, but you shouldn't really throw out his letters at the same time.

Going forward, why don't you get a box for him and then when you want to move his shit just stuff it all in there. That way it's out of your way and if he ends up wanting it you can just point him in the direction of the box.

YABU. Help him out if you can.

Then as a separate thing, work out a place to put his papers/ stuff so you it's out of your way and you don't need to deal with it. And try to get him to put his stuff there too.

He has a place already but never uses it. Hence my frustration.

I should add I don't throw his things away on purpose, and it has only happened once or twice. But his default now when he can't find something is to say I must have thrown it.
