AIBU?

Dicks at safari parks...?

At a lovely kid's party at the local safari park we got chatting to the lady giving the minibus tour.
Apparently, virtually every day, the keepers have to stop/tell people to not open their windows or get out in the enclosures Confused

Are people really this ignorant? The staff said they often have to convince visitors that getting out of their vehicles to pet/feed the animals is not a good idea and the lions are NOT tame like domestic cats!
Aibu to be rather gobsmacked at the frequency of dickish behaviour like this?

Boo. I was so hoping to open this thread to find someone complaining about animals with their willies hanging out.

I was kinda hoping for an animal penis story too....

YANBU. It's the poor animals that would suffer if one of these idiots ended up getting mauled, look at that gorilla that got shot because someones kid climbed in with it.

I'm frequently boggled at the level of stupidity many humans strive for. And not just with wild animals (although the dude who lost an arm sticking it in a tiger cage remains a favourite). I would also like to add: people climbing mountains in crocs, people crossing clearly barriers on the Columbian ice fields and falling into crevasses, people who ski in areas with high avalanche warnings, and people who ride motorcycles without helmets.

Aaaaaaw, sozzers it's not another wanking monkey thread Grin

But yep, can we also add folk who stand 10 metres away from a pelican crossing to run out into the road instead of walking a bit further and using the crossing safely? Especially when they have children with them Halloween Angry

If I was a keeper at one of these parks I think I'd end up subscribing to Darwinism and not bother issuing any warnings.

I think a vast majority of people are stupid and I am pleasantly surprised if I stumble across one who isn't.

I also was expecting a different thread Grin YANBU but honestly at the same time nothing surprises me anymore and I agree with Dubious!

Yeah. We went to Longleat in the summer, and the car next to us wound their window down in the lion enclosure to take a photo. DC were horrified, because we'd just spent 20 mins telling them they must not open windows, doors, and no we're not kidding, we're deadly serious etc.

I wanted to show them

It really is tempting to take all the signs down and not say anything - sign me up for Darwinism as well. If they truly cannot figure out for themselves that prodding a lion with a short stick is a shortcut to a mauling, they DESERVE to be removed from the gene pool. We'd be better off without them, surely?

Yep we were at Woburn earlier this week and the kids were amazed at how many people still had to be told to shut the windows..

YES!

We went to Woban safari park last saturday and while we were on the little train a keeper hitched a lift in our carriage and we over heard this very thing going on on her radio. ''White Smart Car in tiger enclosure with window open - sort it yeah?'' Kind of thing. DH and I were [shocked]

Then, when we were driving through the tiger enclosure, the red car behind us had it's windows down and the keepers truck that hangs about had to shout over the loud speaker twice and then go steaming down the hill to cut them up to get them to shut them.

DH and i were [shocked] again and were like - ''twice in one day!?!. So many people are that thick?''

Can I add the family that laughed so hard at us in Longleat in the monkey section?

They were behind me and DS, we were in a truck with a flat back and a load of monkeys jumped on the back and tried pulling the back wiper off. Could hear this family laughing hysterically behind us, and see them in the rear view.

They pulled around us because I didn't want to move with 15-20 monkeys on the back of the truck, and then drove in front. They had four bicycles on a rack attached the to back of the car....

The monkeys jumped off our truck and completely annihilated the bikes in under a minute - tyres, foam padding, seats, handle bars, spokes the lot....

Shock

Knowsley Safari Park is close to us we are members who visit regularly. I would estimate at least 10% of cars have open windows / idiots hanging out of them.

It's for the same reason that people drive whilst on mobile phones, or smoke tobacco. Whilst some people will crash their car or kill a child, or get cancer, that will be OTHER people, not me.

We are naturally not very good at assessing risk.

This is why I think we should take all the warning labels and signs down. Thin out the stupid from the gene pool a bit. Grin

I agree with scampimom, let them get out the car and poke a lion if they wish but let's not shoot the animal if they don't make it back to the car in time.

The amusing thing is, animals in the wild can understand without any signs to stay away from us as we can harm them... I think we keep the wrong species in zoos tbh.

OMG that lion video!!!

Sorry to say nothing surprises me any more when it comes to entitled sense of 'rules are for other people cos nothing will happen to me, I just want a photo' crap. Yeah a photo of your child being dragged out a window in 10 seconds by a lion!

If these people didn't exist, neither would the Darwin Awards…

In about 1985,the Darwinians started collecting stories of deaths so staggeringly stupid that the victims were said to have contributed to human evolution by 'self-selecting' themselves for extinction.

We're Knowsley members too Unexpsoc and I would say 10% is an underestimate if anything! Some people really are ridiculous. We saw a woman get quite viciously attacked by an ostritch (or emu possibly) there - she not only had the window down, she had lured it over with a bag of QUAVERS. I was almost disappointed that she hadn't tried the same trick in the lion enclosure with a pepperami ....

We had a brilliant experience on the Baboon bus with DH's grandmother and a rather well endowed monkey which took rather a shine to her Shock. Thankfully she thought it was hilarious!
