What is there to love about grotesque skeletons and blood-soaked zombies?

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheep · 23/10/2016 13:53

people like different things shocker!

cosmicglittergirl · 23/10/2016 13:53

The drawing in of nights, a chill in the air livened up with a bit of dressing up and having a night out of fun. The kids enjoy it and hang out with their friends on the street. I love seeing lanterns and the costumes.

Some miseries on MN.

TheCatsMother99 · 23/10/2016 13:54

For me, it's an excuse to get dressed up, be a bit creative or silly and socialise with friends.

PotatoBread · 23/10/2016 13:55

Pre-kids it was an excuse to dress up in shitty polyester fancy dress costume and get tipsy with friends. Post-kids - children enjoy it so I want to enjoy it with them. Plus I like fireworks.

zippey · 23/10/2016 13:57

I love the horror aspect - like you say zombies, Frankenstein, dressing up, witches, horror films etc

Philoslothy · 23/10/2016 13:58

We just like an excuse for a children's party and to decorate the house.

NotwhoIwasthen · 23/10/2016 13:58

I'm with you op, HATE it. Always have done. Just batten the hatches, it's only one night.

ArnieChops · 23/10/2016 13:58

Pagans? It's our new year and There's lots of things to do and look forward to. It's a time for reflecting on the past year and setting new goals for the new year.
I love it!

Microwaste · 23/10/2016 13:59

Pre-kids I barely noticed it. Post-kids, I love it. My children love it and have lots of fun dressing up and eating lots of sweets. We used to live on a great little estate where loads of people decorated their houses, we'd go out trick or treating round the estate and it was a real festival atmosphere. Now we're isolated so we have a party instead. We play ridiculous party games, I make spooky food, we have fun. What's not to like?
I just admit though to not being keen on the ultra-gory costumes for children. I prefer the cartoonish ones, gore can wait until they are much older (oldest is 10).

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/10/2016 14:01

OP does the concept of different people liking different things difficult for you to understand?Confused

Willow2016 · 23/10/2016 14:01

I love it.
Been a horror fan since I was a kid books and films (proper horror films with actual plots I mean!)
Love seeing the kids all dressed up and excited, love the school halloween party, love decorating outside and handing out sweets.
Whats not to like?
Horror is a part of life it is actually good for you to get scared in a controlled manner now and again.

And anyway come the zombie apocalypse me and kids will kick ass thanks to TWD Smile

MangoBiscuit · 23/10/2016 14:05

I love it. I love making decorations with the kids, making silly food with them, having a party with our friends round, playing stupid party games. We have fun.

I've always loved it since I was a kid. Granted the over commercialization is not good but that's the same as Christmas. You can have the Halloween you want. Some friends of ours are Pagan and it's a very special time of year to them and I love that aspect of it. For my mum, it's the Christian celebration that's important and my children love the spooky, dressing up and party element so there is something for everyone. What's not to love?

Budgiebonbon · 23/10/2016 14:11

It is a fab excuse to dress up, look silly and laugh across all ages! Rediculous food and sweets to enjoy and it is the start of winter celebrations to get us through the cold months.

A house on our street hosts a sort of open garden party for all the kids on our road, they have fun and there is a real sense of community.

It has none of the expense, expections and family politics which Christmas has. No massive build up or guilt that it has to be perfect.

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 23/10/2016 14:12

Because it's my birthday and I like to pretend that everyone who dresses up or puts decorations up is doing it in honour of my birthday Grin

But you're being weird. Let people get on with it, just don't join in...

HighwayDragon1 · 23/10/2016 14:14

Free sweets!!

Sparklesilverglitter · 23/10/2016 14:16

Been a horror fan for year so Halloween is a bit of fun.

I can't understand the miserable people that doesn't like it. We're all different

Sparklingbrook · 23/10/2016 14:20

I like to see the children happy and having a bit of fun. Our Halloweens never involved blood soaked zombies or grotesque skeletons though. So not sure whose Halloween you are basing it on.

It's one night. Halloween Grin

It is just some fun, seeing everyone dressed up and have fun games, fun foods etc.

I have always liked halloween, my birthday is not long after halloween and so my dad and stepmum always threw me a halloween themed birthday parties. I would really enjoy it and now I enjoy seeing my son enjoy halloween.

I would hope we don't ever go as crazy as the Americans over Hallowe'en - but I do think it's good fun for the children and so I rather like it.

YuckYuckEwwww · 23/10/2016 14:33

You call people that don't like the same thing as you 'miserable' then in the next sentence say 'we're all different. it's not compulsary, if people don't like that other people enjoy it then that is miserable

reasons to like it:

  • It's a holiday that's about fun with friends and neighbours: Christmas: everyone's busy with family, Easter: either busy with church or off on family holidays, Summer: mostly people doing their own thing! But Halloween half term is a great time to have fun with friends and neighbours with no pressure to do "the rounds" of every relative, its quite soon after summer so people mostly don't go away and are available to hang out and enjoy it together

  • it's about creativity, it doesn't have to be tasteful, its interesting to see people's interpretations and ideas, it's artistic

  • exploring morbid themes in a safe way is healthy, that's the point of fairy stories and imaginary play

  • it brightens up darker evenings

  • it's about being in touch with the seasons: seasonal food etc, and being creative with it

  • you can really go to town without the expense of Christmas, you can throw a party and people don't feel they have to bring a gift and expensive wine or food, a £1 bag of sweets or some tat is enough for the host

  • as a country we're shockingly bad at death and hide it away, why is halloween offensive here? I think its connected to how so many people dye alone TBH. It's okay to explore morbid themes
ThymeLord · 23/10/2016 14:33

I like it because I like dressing up, going to a halloween party, seeing all the houses decorated, eating eyeball sweets. It's fun.
