AIBU?

AIBU to think that a cashier shouldn't comment on personal items you're buying?

Just home from the weekly shop at Asda. The cashier gave a running commentary on all of my shopping. Oh that looks nice, oh aren't those ready meals handy, oh what is that, I'll need to try that. Mildly annoying but I'm sure she was just trying to be friendly. However, where I think she really crossed the line was when she seen my pregnancy test and said, oh I hope it's a yes! I didn't know what to say!

I would have likely said 'me too' - it doesn't no bother me, I suppose they are really bored and trying to make a bit of convo. You could always do scan as you shop in Tesco, that way your bags are already packed by the time you reach the checkout area and you can hide all manner of things in them lol

I don't mind them staying stuff like, "oh that's a nice top" etc

Yes you are quite right to be offended.... all cashiers should be mute like robots

Or you could use self service to avoid all human interaction....or shop online with just a driver to momentarily have contact with

I don't mind them commenting on general things like "ooh those crisps are lovely" but I think anything personal like pregnancy tests, medications etc should be passed through without comment.

I had to buy ds1 (9 at the time) a shirt and smart trousers. The lady serving in next said "ooh are you going to a party?" Me.. "no we're going to a funeral" which we were.. got to the day before mil's funeral and I realised ds1 had nothing suitable to wear!

This has just reminded me that ive not seen the annoying Asda cashier who does this for a while.. I usually avoid her checkout!

Yanbu, one young man once commented on some underwear I was buying. Awkward Confused

I hate people commenting on my shopping too! I once bought a fair bit of fruit and veg (because it was all I needed) and was told I should get some loo roll as well!

I now do the scan as you shop. No comments.

Some of them have taken the 'conversation with customers' training too seriously. I know some people will appreciate the chats, but when there's a queue down the aisle and if the customer doesn't respond beyond the minimum, perhaps they should take the hint? I don't go in for chats, I go in to buy stuff I need. No, they're not robots (rolling eyes smiley needed) but when it's clear someone's in a rush, they really could be less chatty. This is why I do use the self service at the petrol station/supermarket or go to Lidl!

I worked in a shop on a till once and we were told (and spied on) to make 'reassuring comments' on every customer purchase.
I hated doing it. Customers hated me doing it but it was my job, we were told to.

It's not easy working in retail, it's a very very long day working on a till, I don't know what ASDA are told to do but it's a possibility that she's instructed to do things like that.
You could have brought it at a self service till if you didn't want someone to comment on it

When I used to work in a supermarket to get money for college, you had to make conversation, and you got higher points for both item specific conversation and prolonging the conversation passed what are you doing today/the weather/etc. It's possible they just didn't think that you might not want a yes and saw a pregnancy test as an easy conversation!

Not right, perhaps, but complaining tends to just get the cashier told off rather than making anyone consider if their policies are crap.

I'm probably just feeling a bit sensitive because I took a test on Friday which was negative and was trying not to think about it. But I thought the unspoken rule was that you didn't mention condoms, tampons or pregnancy kits!

Once, when buying new pillows, the cashier told us how awful they were, worse than nothing apparently. They were the best we could afford at the time. It was embarrassing.

They don't sell pregnancy tests in supermarkets in Germany, you have to go to an Apoteke/chemist. They don't sell paracetamol either.

Ok the pregnancy test crossed the line but she was just being friendly. Miserable bugger

When ever I buy fresh cherries I always get these will be expensive, yes I know about £5ish every time. I don't need a check out clerk to tell me if I can or can't afford something in my trolley.

I don't mind general chit chat, just don't comment on the items I wish to purchase. Especially personal items such as thrush cream or lube.

Report
Backingvocals · 23/10/2016 10:57

I'm pretty shocked at that. You don't have to be an international diplomat to realise that pregnancy tests are not a matter for public discussion.

Report
Backingvocals · 23/10/2016 10:58

It's not friendly. It's thoughtless and intrusive.

Hate the chit chat anyway but will go along with it re apples and bread. Pregnancy tests and sanitary items no.

Pretty inappropriate I think. Someone in my local Co Op does this, although so far only about how nice food items look. Hopefully if I bought a pg test or condoms etc he'd give it a rest.
