AIBU?

to feel that this is making me hate living in Scotland?

I have posted here before about this - the incessant talk of referendums and yesterday's news about the bloody SNP drawing up a bill for bloody indyref 2. I am so fucking sick of it, I truly am. I love my life here but am just so fed up of the constant threat of independence referendums, I cannot and will not bear another one. My job would be seriously at risk in the event of independence and in any case I just wouldn't want to live here or bring my family up with the consequences of independence.

It's making me hate being Scottish and hate living in Scotland when I can never feel settled as the threat is constantly hanging over us. There are idiots on my FB celebrating the 'announcement' of indyref2 yesterday and I have just had enough of it all, I thought this was settled in 2014.

Truly hope Nicola Sturgeon is put in her place over this and told that no she's not getting another referendum and to get on with her actual job of running the country.

I agree 100%. The 2014( supposedly once in a generation ) Referendum was awful with our family - like others- split down the middle . I truly wish that the SG would get on with running the country and make use of the considerable powers they have in Health, Education etc

Also agree- hate indyref and the talk of the land of milk and honey we'll apparently have- really wishing we had not just bought our house now.

Yeah our family had fall outs that I don't think will ever be repaired, it was so bitter. I lost friends over it. And these same people are getting excited over another one.

I was heavily against the idea of Scottish independence last time round, but to be honest I think they have a point post Brexit: we are now in a very different ballgame, and Scotland did vote heavily to stay in. It would also be very much in their interests to stay in the Eurozone and they would probably benefit from businesses that want a UK base but only if the UK stays in Europe. I know there's no guarantee that they would be allowed to join the EU, but again I suspect Brexit will have made this much easier for them.

I voted Yes in the last one but I have to say I agree with you- they can't keep dragging us through another one until they get the result they want. The country had a chance to change things and voted not to, that should be the end of it.

I just think the EU and Brexit are a red herring as the EU would not touch an independent Scotland with a barge pole. By the time Scotland cleared its deficit - IF it cleared its deficit - the EU may no longer even exist. It amazes me that people don't see this.

Also, 1.6m people in Scotland voted remain. 1m voted leave and 1.4m people simply did not care enough about it to vote at all.

I totally agree OP. I'm English but live in Glasgow and was horrified at some of the anti-English sentiment that came with the first referendum. I'm dreading having to go through it all again. There still remains a lot of unanswered questions such as the currency issue and whether an independent Scotland would be allowed into the EU anyway. We could theoretically be out of both the UK and the EU ..

If you feel that strongly, just vote no. The fact is that plenty of people feel the goalposts have changed massively since September 2014.

YABU. Unfortunately, in a democracy, what the majority wants happens. The SNP were democratically voted for in numbers that meant they have twice as many MSPs as their nearest rivals. It might not be what you want, but it is what the majority wants.

I agree it can get a bit much on social media etc though. I recommend steeling yourself.to hit hide post/thread or block rather than reading and getting sucked in.

The whole 'wearescotland' hashtag and this pretence that Scotland is so inclusive is laughable too. I saw some disgusting anti English racism in 2014 that still persists, and talk of 'pure born Scots'. Scottish people can be appallingly racist towards English people, I have lived here all my life and seen it many times.

I don't think another referendum IS what the majority wants. I think most Scottish people would just like to get on with it really and not go back to the unpleasantness of 2014.

I actually disagree, I was a no voter initially but post Brexit am now a yes. I'm ashamed to be connected to the rest of Britain thanks to the current leader in Westminster and the racist overtones in her current policies. Nicola Sturgeon seems to be the only leader currently listening to people and not taking us down a path of marginalisation. If Brexit hadn't occurred I wouldn't have considered changing my mind and I highly doubt a second referendum would ever have taken place.

I think that sentence should probably be prefaced with "A minority of" or "some". I am English living in Scotland and have not seen or experienced any anti- Englishness since I was a child.

Plenty of anti Westminster rhetoric, but not anti English.

I don't think another referendum IS what the majority wants.

The majority was pretty foolish to vote for a party promising it then...

The anti-Scottish sentiment peddled in the media in the run-up to the indyref was also disgusting and very ignorant.

Maybe you need new friends, I have seen no evidence of this, before or since the last referendum.

Not friends that I've seen it from bloodymaria, thankfully.

I don't think having another referendum is fair because it's been done and the people DID decide. We can't keep asking hoping for a different result. Incidentally I voted YES to independence.

However I haven't lost a single friend or family member because of any of this. People are entitled to political opinions even if they're not the same as mine and I have to respect that. So I might disagree with someone but I wouldn't have a massive row - what's the point? We live in a democracy!

If someone was voting for Trump then yes that would colour my view of them because he is fundamentally prejudiced but whether someone votes yes/no leave/ remain means nothing as to my opinion and feelings for that person.

It does strike me that those who claim not to have experienced anti Englishness or racism tend to be yes voters. Being a no voter in 2014 Scotland was not a pleasant experience.

Surely by having numerous ones it's kind of like saying "I dont like the answer you gave last time, so I will ask until you give me the answer I want"?

It sounds like you had a hard time during Indyref and I'm sorry for it.

I honestly didn't see any anti-English sentiment during the referendum. I have English friends who were campaigning for the SNP and the Greens for a Yes vote.

It is hard to go through it again but it is what people voted for at the last Scottish elections. The SNP manifesto was very clear about what would happen in the event of a rUK Leave vote which was not supported by the majority of Scots.

You might not like the SNP but they do have a legitimate mandate for this.
