Give ratedpeople man a refund?

I had a couple of jobs that needed doing so I posted them on rated people.

One job I have hired the guy he seemed fine.

The other job a man came round to but spent five minutes looking at the job and another half hour telling me off about how my request had offered too little money. (My offer was in the thousands for the part of the job I'd specified and then more for an optional extra bit which I hadn't put in the advert but would pay more for, which I told him.)

Ok fine so I estimated wrong I guess. I don't think he would have spent half an hour telling a man off. I was on my own in the house with children and holding a baby so quite easy to intimidate. Luckily I knew our builders would be arriving in a minute and he left pretty sharpish when they got there.

So far, so day in the life of being a woman. But I just got a text through from rated people asking me to confirm he hadn't been allowed to quote on the job and should get a refund (from them, not me - they pay to get job details).

Should I confirm and get him the refund? I'm sure it's hard work making a living etc.

Nope! Not a chance. All he had to do was tell you you'd quoted too low and what he'd do it for. How could you possibly know exactly what he would be charging!

I agree no chance! I'd tell them he had every opportunity to quote but chose not too.

God, no, just tell them what happened. Otherwise you'd effectively be lying for him--what's the point in that.

Tell them what happened then hopefully it will make him think twice about pulling this shit again

Thank you I won't then. I was surprised he thought that that was how the visit had gone. Also I have someone doing the job for the amount I wanted now, so it wasn't THAT insulting.

Only problem is that he knows my address and I don't know anything about him.

I'm confused - isn't the point of a tradesman coming to give you a quote, the fact they they know how much it's going to cost them to do the work ?
How are you supposed to know what it's going to cost?
If I have a job that needs doing, I call 3 companies, tell them what I want doing, and then they come to look in more detail and give me a quote if interested. It doesn't start with me saying 'I have £X'.

Going out and giving quotes to people is part of a tradesman's work, and should be factored in to the prices of all jobs they do.

Backforgood I agree and it's stressful estimating for the ratedpeople posting! They give you ranges to choose from but even so i have no idea how you're supposed to even pick a range! I think I'd just ask Facebook friends if they know anyone in future! Although the other guy I got from there seems normalish so far.

I would say not only was he given a chance to quote that he spoke to you in a patronising and derogatory manner.

I would also tell them what happened. He should have been professional and mentioned the misquote without lecturing you. His his poor attitude would have not landed him the job. It's 2016 with plenty of women arranging their own building work. Maybe they will pass on the feedback and he will learn something.
