I think that it is problematic when politicians don't live by their own standards. However, ultimately what matters is the job they do, not the life they lead. Where SC's son goes to school isn't exactly going to impact her performance as shadow AG (which I think she's going to do a great job at!). Plus, regarding schools, there are TWO parents making a decision about it after all, and although it's a bit convenient that she says it's her ex who wants her DS to go there, it's also not implausible that he would want this.

I'm a rich leftie. I won't send my kids to private school, or tutor them through a grammar school exam; they'll go to our local comprehensive, which is where I went.

I don't believe a parent's wealth should be the primary determiner of a child's academic success, I don't believe in two-tier systems, and I don't believe in patronising scholarships for one or two bright kids from poor backgrounds.

Anyway.

Some lefties are full of shit. Some people are full of shit.

And some people have the intellectual capacity to see that using one individual, from a fucking huge and diverse group, to tar them all is pretty thick.

I don't think it's being a hypocrite at all. You have to use the system that exists. I think private schools are the biggest obstacle we have to social mobility and I wish there was a way to get rid of them completely...but under the current system I would still consider sending my child to one because why should they suffer for my principles? Sacrificing your child's future (hypothetically...I'm not saying sending them to a comp would be doing that) isn't going to change the system.

I actually think it's more hypocritical when politicians say "oh yes of course I sent them to state school" but it is actually some niche central London impossible to get into place which is a world away in demographic and results from your local comp.
