AIBU?

Having a newborn baby's ears pierced.

I know that millions of people do it.
But the baby has no choice. I would so like to know the explanations for the decision to put a hole through your baby's perfectly formed ears.
Why would you do that?
(I had a friend who did that, and I had to ring an ambulance because the 2 month old baby got a blood infection). Mum didn't want to call an ambulance because she was afraid of being told off for doing this to her child. She was bathing her 2 month old baby's ear in olive oil, and hoping for the best. Please let your child grow up, and then decide if they want a piercing. Babes in arms do not have a choice.

Oh god this is a can of worms.

I despise seeing babies with pierced ears but you'll inevitably get people on this thread saying that it's fine/culturally acceptable etc. I hope you've got your flame proof suit on Blush

Zzzzzzzzzz.

There are far more outrageous things visited upon newborns than pierced ears.

If people spent a fraction of the time worrying about child poverty (reaching almost Victorian levels in Tory Britain), and neglect as they did getting into a lather about shit like this, then maybe proper action might be taken.

I hope she was completely bald and had a beautiful headband with a bow on too. Perfect.

What is your AIBU? Are you asking if your unreasonable to do it? Or just looking for a bun fight?

You don't like it fine don't do it then. What other people do to there children is up to them

Not commenting on the rest, but a two month old is not a newborn.

I'll bite! for the benefit of spectators Grin

DH is from a culture where baby ear piercing is the norm. And the way they explain it away is "it doesn't hurt at that age".

I completely disagree - it hurts, they just don't remember it. There's a difference. But that is what a lot of people seem to believe.

So, there's that.

It's a bit tedious when people say "loads of threads have been done about this OP" etc do people really expect the OP to have read every MN thread?! Confused

I'm amazed it's not illegal actually, totally unnecessary, and why ears, why is no where else acceptable?!

Could you legally pierce a baby's nose?

Report
MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/09/2016 21:50

No soffenrrr to when they have their inoculations I suppose. Really naff though.

"What other people do to there children is up to them"

That reasoning only goes so far, you know that right? For example I think a parent tattooing their baby or child would be universally condemned. In the OPs view, ear piercing crosses the line as well.
