DD (11) wanted her face painted. Isn't she a bit old or AIBU?

Hi, not really sure what to compare it to, so don't know if I'm BU or not! We recently went to a fair and the DC got their faces painted. I have 5 DC (3, 4, 7 and 11) the youngest got theirs done and then oldest DD was picking out hers. I joking said "aren't you bit old" and laughed, it was just a joke and she took it very seriously and was in a right old strop and decided to not get it done. I now feel really awful I was BU wasn't I? Or do 11 year olds tend to get their faces painted? Btw, I have NCed.
