AIBU?

Is it odd for a 15-18 year old to be in the pool (when the only thing on is children's swimming lessons)?

I know that I'm probably being ridiculous, but after that park thread/Crimewatch I feel a bit over cautious.

I frequently take my daughter to her swimming lesson, there are a mixture of boy and girls that are 3-6 and different sections of the pool are cut off for each stage. There is a tiny square left for people to swim, but no one ever stays swimming or comes at this time as 1) it's so small 2) it's really noisy 3) it's full of kids and parents waiting for their children to finish lessons.

For the last 3 weeks, every single time there has been the lessons (only lasts an hour and a half) a girl who is around 15-18 stands in that one bit of the pool. No swimming, just stands looking at the lessons. I think nearly every mum has noticed...

Isn't this odd behaviour? She is always in the changing room when all the mums/kids are and walks out to the pool at the same time. She then gets out after the hour and a half when it's over. It's just too much of a coincidence!

What would you think?

That she is accompanying an older sibling who gets themselves changed?

I think you might be over thinking it but I can understand why

If the pool is that small, why don't they close it during lessons?

I wouldn't find it strange if she was swimming it if she's standing watching the kids maybe speak to the pool manager and raise your concerns. She's definitely not the sister of a child or anything?

Yes are you sure she's not with one of the children?

I would think she is there with one of the kids? tbh I think thats what 99.99% of people would think, but mumsnet might prove me wrong

Maybe she doesn't know how to swim so is watching how the kids are learning and waiting to get brave enough to try herself?? (Sounds far fetched I know but there is a girl who does that at our pool, after a few weeks she got brave enough to try and is coming on pretty well, I've been keeping a half eye on her whilst watching my boys lessons just in case it does go wrong, although it is a pool that is the same depth all the way through so if she needed to she could stand at any point)

When I say girl I actually mean woman in her early to mid twenties

No, she definitely isn't with anyone... All the children have mums there.

It's open because then mums can get in for a bit, etc.

First thought was maybe she can't swim and is kinda...pining over the chance the children are getting to learn.

Maybe she wants to be a swimming instructor?

Probably just a sibling of one of the children and rather then stand on side with her mum just wants to hang about in the water

It is odd but I would probably think she has special needs rather than being a predatory threat to the children.

still thinking sulky teen sister forced to 'swim' while younger sibling has lessons

She could be shadowing as part of her training. You can't be sure she's not with a child.

What exactly are you worried about? Your children are supervised so what do you think could happen to them?

Oh, maybe. I hadn't thought of those

That was my first guess Worra, but then why be in the pool not just sit on the edge?

Isn't she an older sibling of a child having a lesson ? That would be my first thought - being told to go off and have a swim at the same time and then watching her younger sibling while mum stays on side.

The classes we have are ability base not age. We lived several year nowhere near a pool now we are mine an have lessons but are frequently the eldest in them. Is is possible she waiting for a place in the class despite her age and watching what they do ?

I would have assumed an older sibling, too.

I would say older sibling, possibly with special needs and happier in the pool than sitting with her mum.

Teachers daughter?

Sounds like a sibling waiting for a lesson or maybe doing something to do with dofe.. My 15 yr old dyspraxic son learnt to swim last year for dofe.. He was in a group with 1/2 dozen kids aged about 8.. Lots of mother did actually point, stare and question what he was doing there. I thought they were very odd.

DD's swimming teacher uses young people of this age who have passed their lifesaving society Bronze Medallion ( you have to be 13) as life guards. Could it be that she is watching the lessons to endure no one in trouble gets missed.

I would assume a teachers daughter too.

Thanks everyone, maybe it's just something like that then!
