Cyclists on pavement

So this week a lady has been riding her bike on the pavement whilst children and their parents are attempting to walk in the opposite direction. She does not stop for anyone and yesterday had knocked a small child over grumbled something and carried on riding her bike on the pavement. Today I could see her coming towards me so I stopped where I was and refused to move for her. She stopped and said I was an inconvenience and I should move my fat a### out the way. I replied " you should not be riding your bike on the pavement you should be in the road" she then rode off swearing and shoving her two fingers up at me. Charming!! Two other mothers witnessed this and said thank you to me for saying something another however said I was in the wrong for not moving out of the way for her.
The pavement gets really busy after school as its the only way children and parents can walk to either their cars or the bus stop. All I am concerned about is the safety of the children but she seems to only care about herself. Was I in the wrong??

You know you weren't in the wrong.
But then it's usually any excuse to start a Bike bashing thread round here.

I don't mind children cycling on the pavement but adults fuck me off when they expect you to jump out of their way because they're going at 20mph. They're dangerous.

For me it would depend on how you approached it, by the sounds of it the lady might just dig her heels in further now.

If you yourself are not sure, and the two eye witnesses said you were wrong, then......

I thought you were only allowed to ride on the pavement if you were

Riding on pavements is disgressionary to the local police. Someone will probs point to the HC on this but in reality it's open to a copper's interpretation of what's reasonable i.e. children usually.

Has there been no reaction to her knocking a child over? That happened by were I live and I know the Police went out to the riders house.

She should get off the bike and walk past the busy school bit.

Tbh it depends on the road. If it is shoddy or crazy busy I would always try to accommodate a cyclist, it takes 2 secs out of my day to let them past. This particular one sounds like a liability however.

I think you might live near me OP, we have a very similar situation.

An awful lot of adults ride on the pavement as a default now.

Two witnesses thanked me for saying something . Another lady said I was wrong that's what has made me question myself. I was not rude in any way just refused to move out of her way. I'm sure if you are travelling with children the pavement is acceptable but she has been alone on every occasion.

A stick in her spokes would soften her cough.

Well done for standing up to her. She sounds like a bully. Cycling on the pavement is illegal, definitely for adults anyway. I'm too cowardly to confront pavement cyclists though, because I know that if they're antisocial enough to cycle on pavements then they will probably give you a mouthful of abuse if you dare to challenge them.

I have a trailer on the back of my bike which my 3 yr old rides in. I ride on quiet roads with him but I am afraid if I feel the road is too fast or busy or risky at all I will ride on the pavement. however I always get off and walk the bike past pedestrians. I always cycle on the road or a cycle path when it is just me.

stick in the spokes? You mean encouraging assaulting as a peice of advice?

We have a school crossing patrol lady who cycles on the pavement by the school. Bizarre.

Any adult who cycled into a small child round here would have their bike posted up their arse, tbh.

yeah I ride a bit on commute where it is hazardous to ride. IF I come across a ped then they have the right of way or Iget off and walk a bit.

Woman sounds like a nightmare but NARALT.

Thanks for replies. There is a big enough road which is quiet maybe 2 or 3 cars parked so plenty of room for her on the road.

Well it sounds like this particular cyclist was breaking the law and generally a bit thick and unreasonable. Shame on her!However..... Let's not bash cyclists.... I saw a post (on another site) about how somebody had seen a cyclist go through the red lights and then another one did some other stupid/inconsiderate/illegal thing. There is a lot of stuff in the media about cyclists who behave badly but believe me this type of behaviour is not restricted to cyclists and in fact most cyclists are courteous people just like you and me. You get people who don't know how to behave in all walks of life - and you might come across them driving a car, shopping, cycling.... Or doing any other activity under the sun. As a cyclist I've had cars knock me off my bike, overtake me on blind bends, overtake and then immediately turn left (making me nearly slam into the side of their cars). As a shopper, I've seen people hit their kids, pickpocket and shoplift..... Etc etc

Most cyclists, most drivers and most shoppers do the decent thing..... As do most people in general. Unfortunately every time a cyclist does something stupid, it is all over social media.

Sorry, i'm probably going off at a tangent but as you can tell, I feel strongly.

I cycle on a path on the way to work for a very short time. I don't feel safe enough to ride on that road. However, I get off and walk past people, I never cycle past them.

I hate cyclists who do that to me.

I know most cyclists are ok. I'm one of them. Smile

Adult cyclists on pavements knocking over children are wankers.

Cyclists should not be riding on the pavement. No ifs or buts, they should not do it.

According to Laws HA 1835 section 72 & RSA 1984, section 129, cyclists must not cycle on the pavement.
