Neighbour ranting at dog for weeing

I have a route I walk my dog in the morning before work (it's the closest one where there's a footpath I can let him off the lead a bit). About a year ago I was walking him towards the footpath (still by road and houses and on lead), there was a woman with her Jack Russell dog who I would sometimes meet and say Hi to - she lives in that street. Her dog always barks at mine (small dog barking at big dog - we are used to it!), so he was across the road barking at us and I crossed towards them at this point as the pavement runs out on my side and we always cross there to avoid walking on the road. Her dog barks more, she hits the dog (!) and calls me a 'stupid woman' for crossing. After it had sunk in what she'd said I let her know I didn't stand for being called names and why we crossed (I had to shout it as she had scurried down the road).

Anyway, since then she has avoided me, crossing the road when she sees me etc. This morning, we were about to pass her house when she came out with dog, crossed over to avoid us as usual then back to pavement behind us. So, my dog decides to have a wee against the corner of the wall where her gate is. She must have been watching as she suddenly starts having a go at me "You're not going to let your dog wee there are you?" etc. I replied that it is a public street - what's the problem. She asked me how I'd like it if she took her dog to mine and let it wee. I said that was fine, go ahead. I'm afraid I also said something along the lines of "I wouldn't be such a cow to have a go at you about your dog having a bloody wee".

Let them pee on a tree, not on property. If it's next to her gate, she'll have to wash it off or it will stink.

I wouldn't let my dog wee on someone's wall or fence tbh. Hedges yes, trees yes but not those and esp not near to the gate. I think YABU in this instance.

Of course she'll have to wash it off. Dog wee stinks. If you've ever gone to a dog show and smelt the bins that everyone lets their dogs pee on, you'll understand.

I have six dogs, including two entire males, and they aren't allowed to pee on anything other than trees or grass.

She's got a reactive dog so you moved nearer to it rather than wait for it to go by, you said yourself her dog barks at yours.

You let your dog pee on her gate/wall, you could easily stopped this and encouraged it to pee on a tree.

I have three dogs. None are allowed to wee up people's front gardens. They can wee on a grass verge (council owned) or up a tree or in the fields. People regularly let their dogs piss up my gate, which I actually have to touch to open. Pretty unpleasant.

Also, I think YABU to have walked at her dog from across the road when you knew it was a reactive dog. Why couldn't you have waited 20 seconds for them to get further along or just have walked down the road til you had gotten in front? My lovely, very well behaved dog has been attacked twice on lead and would have gotten stressed and started to have a meltdown in that situ, forcing me to do a 180 and run back the way we had come. Everyone in my village gives dogs space, not all dogs like all other dogs.

This situation doesn't surprise me, I've fell out over my dog not being liked by other dogs, more than I did over my children .

I don't think you should let your dog wee by someone's gate. Is it actually her property?
However, she does sound a bit bonkers, therefore YA both BU.

I must add though, that I'm on my first dog after cats, and I think dog wee isn't very smelly. Cat wee, on the other hand...

I agree that you shouldn't let your dog pee on someone's garden/property/wall. It does smell and it encourages other dogs to also leave their mark. I have three dogs and I don't let any of them pee on people's property. They toilet on grass or trees (or the odd lamp post).

Also if her dog is reactive and barking at yours then waiting twenty seconds to cross the road would have been much more helpful to her.

Yeah I wouldn't have let my dogs wee on the property of a neighbour I'd already had a run in with. Kinda looks antagonistic.

I let them use lampposts and trees but not walls and gates/gate posts.

I get annoyed about things that people might find stupid, I really can't see myself getting annoyed about a dog weeing on my property though. If it was a poo right in the middle of her driveway and you didn't pick it up then that would be different.

Do people really clean dog wee off things that are outside?

I've got two dogs and I think you've been a bit unreasonable.

One of mine will bark and growl at other dogs. It does add stress and, especially if it was an early morning walk and you knew noise was likely it wild have been nicer all round just to wait the 20 seconds, or cross at a wide angle etc.

And I don't let my dogs wee on other people's property. General grass verges yes, gardens and gates and walls no.

Dogs pissing on property is vile. We have open front gardens here and the number of owners who stand idly by while their dogs pee over grass that my kids play on annoys the heck out of me.

No we aren't allowed fences and dogs just piss on them as well.

Yes you were unreasonable for three reasons:

You could have waited to cross the road until she had gone further down the path with her dog particularly as she has a reactive dog and you are well aware of this - why antagonise the dog?

Letting your dog wee on the gatepost of the other dog is allowing your dog to mark the territory of the other dog who is already reactive and that will only make it worse.

It's bad behaviour to let your dogs wee on people's property whether they are dog owners or not as it encourages more weeing from other dogs onto that spot and it does stink.

Try and be more considerate in future, it makes lives so much easier.

YABU. I don't let my dog wee on other people's property. I think it's bad manners. Very occasionally, he might lift his leg and I will pull him away and he's started but usually, I know the signs and tell him not to.
