Some posters really are just plain nasty. Bitchy keyboard warriors. I'm actually gobsmacked by the level of vitriol in some of them. Why do people do it?

Because much like yourself OP (I suspect), they can simply name change once they've said whatever they wanted to say.

Then it's all forgotten about because no-one knows what they've said.

YANBU. It's like a snake pit at the moment. There's currently a thread running about the child of an OP who has been given responsibility of helping a Hungarian pupil who speaks no English to speak, read and write in English. The child is 8. Because the OP used the term 'top of her class' about her DD she was been royally jumped on, questioned and accused of bragging. Why do posters do that - take half a sentence in the OP and run away with it?

Bit like starting the umpteenth thread on the fact than on a largely unmoderated site not everyone is nice all the time; again because you can.

The real options are to take it up in the thread, use the report function, or choose a different site.

I've no idea what a TAAT is. It is a genuinely asked question, I'm new on here, haven't changed my name or whatever. Just really shocked by some responses to fairly innocuous orignal posts. My daughter is 8 and is learning about online behaviour; be as kind and truthful as you would be in real life. Seems so simple yet plenty of grown ups can't seem to manage it. Why do people seem to find it so difficult?

It's not that they find it difficult, it's that they don't want to do it. This site is largely unmoderated, so it's a natural place for that kind of poster. There are other sites, more actively moderated, which have a quite different tone. You might find yourself more at home on one of them.

Also, this site (which bills itself as 'the one with the swearing') does not appear to be used by children. So it's also the place where people really don't have to set a good example.

Whilst this is admirable, I can't help feeling that it's important to realise some people are "keyboard warriors" and won't adhere to it. I think that's also an important life lesson FWIW. My 8 year old has extremely limited and always fully supervised online access.

TAAT = Thread about a Thread - they are banned, largely because otherwise the people who have been bitchy and unreasonable in one thread and have been sanctioned for it, just start another thread bitching about how unfair it was that their comments got removed from the other one - and so on.

One of my pet hates about this place is how abbreviations and phrases are bandied about - it's very unfriendly to newcomers. But I don't like jargon and buzzwords.

I do think YABU. It's a fairly anonymous forum where people can give their honest opinions. It's kind of refreshing to know what peoples general opinions are without worrying about them moderating them because of social rules.

Well I think part of the reason is that there are soooo many threads on AIBU which are the tiniest most inconsequential things ever. Frankly, they just don't need to be posted.

Ie "AIBU to think this woman was vile?
I was out shopping 3 days ago and a woman walked past me, then turned around and gave me a dirty look. I've been furious about it since, AIBU to think she was really horrible?"

I mean, just no need for it to every be a thread about half the stuff on AIBU

Presumably if it is a popular thread with multiple comments then it is a valid thread as it sparked discussion?

Minions yes you're right, it's easy enough to ignore it. But it is annoying! Esp if someone asks AIBU for something that they couldn't possibly be being unreasonable for.
