Knife blocks. Tell me to woman up

We need new knives as I do loads of cooking and we have a rag tag selection of broken and cheap bendy ones.
I've been on Amazon looking at knives and knife blocks.
I can't get beyond thinking of murder mystery and horror films where a character notices a knife is missing from the knife block.
I am being very silly aren't I?

We have had a knife missing from the knife block for about 8 months now. I just thought the dishwasher had somehow swallowed it. Now I'm not so sure Confused

I have a sort of universal knife block, which holds quite a large number of knives. There isn't a specific slot for each knife, and in effect, there are always lots of spare slots. There are always some knives in the dishwasher, or waiting to go in, so I'd never know if one was missing, anyway, from a quick glance.

I don't know if that makes you feel better or worse?

lozza if you live in Cambridge and it's a serrated edged knife I've accidentally taken it home with me with leftover ginger cake.

If it's not you I really need to text my friend...

That's why I don't have a knife block. It's too easy for a burglar to just grab one.

Oh, er, that's not really helped!!

My neighbour stabbed my friend with a knife from his knife block. After the trial the police brought the knife back for his wife to presumably complete her set again. Sick.
I can't look at a block now or leave a knife visible in the kitchen. I can use them but not look at an unattended one.
My friend died.
He served 6 years of a 12 year sentence.
He is out now and roaming the streets.

We bought a set of global knives from Costco. They were very expensive but worth every penny AND they came with a knife block.

The knife block was always dusty and awkward to clean. It was nearish to the hob too, so would get oil spatter on it. Annoyance abounds.

In the end we put the knives in a childproofed drawer and gave the knife block to a charity shop, who sold it for a tenner to some more mug who's probably redonated it by now. Happy days all round.

By the way, when the time comes to sharpen your knives, don't use those stick things. You'll remove all the globally goodness and may as well buy a cheap knife.

DH bought these block things that they use in Japan. I can't be faffed using them as it takes ages and causes clay like mess on the counters. What I do is get the blocks, knives etc out and pretend that I'm going to sharpen the knives. Dh usually then gets in a tailspin, screams "noooooo" and sharpens them all himself. Then he puts them in the dishwasher and away in the childproof drawer, so again, happy days all round.

Bloody knife blocks (not literally, obviously).

PurpleDaisies, scarily enough you have the location almost spot on! But alas, mine is a small, straight-edged knife. Better text your mate!

I have this knife block, which is basically guaranteed never to show up in a horror movie. Neon!!

I hope you get your knife back. I accidentally melted the handle of one of mine so there's a permanent gap in the knife block which disturbs me.

I refuse to use a knife block as I like to keep my sharp knives hidden away. It's a Midsomer Murder thing.

Bought a knife block containing a set of knives from Sainsbury's years ago. I got it cheap because one vegetable knife was missing. I then had lots of worried moments in case it had been used in a crime and could be traced back to our knife block Confused

I don't like knife blocks, they must get grubby inside. One more thing to clean, surely? There's also the easy access weapon issue, which I had not previously considered.

I hate them.

I keep my knives sheafed, in the drawer.

Faster knife sharpening is very much DH's domain, he has one of those Japanese blocks too - along with some gorgeous japanese knives that are too nice to hang out with the other knives in our universal block. They lie in red velvet cushioned boxes - I kid you not.

I use one of those knife blocks with loads of little sticks/spaghetti things in it. Like in the photo. The ones with fixed holes never seemed to fit the knives I had. Can't believe how much the old knife block used to annoy me.

There was a murder a few years ago when a lady was stabbed with a knife from her knife block which was never recovered.
A friends husband was the senior investigating officer and he came home that night and threw their kb in the bin. She has never had one again since.

I think if someone's broken into my house and wants to kill me, I'm not sure the presence or absence of a knife block is hugely going to affect my chances.

Anyway, I have Guinea pigs who would squeak loudly enough to wake me up/scare them away so I think it'll be ok.
