Spider help

Anyone know of a way to get rid of spiders? We keep getting loads of them. They are huge massive long legs with their body's raised up of the floor (if you know the ones I mean!) I've just spent half an hour stood on the bed until it ran back out and sprayed it with half a can of hair spray . I'm terrified of the things and DP wasn't here to catch it I don't really believe in killing them

I feel your pain. The only way I know to get rid of them is with a shoe or a broom. Sadly you can't stop them coming in. I hate them!!

I have a huge loofah spider phobia.
My D fiancé died several weeks ago and one of my fears over the future is spider related. He got so good at removing them without me even knowing of their existence. I loved him very much.
What can i do apart from chucking a book/shoe? I don't think i can bring myself to capture and release. Even writing this post is making me feel all goose pimply and slightly tearful.

Yes, open door and broom to sweep them out technique (keep an eye on it though in case it surfs the bristles and comes back towards you). Or glass and piece of cardboard if it isn't too massive. I am waiting to try out the conker theory but the conkers aren't out yet

Ghostinthebackofyourhead. I'm sorry for your loss I'm right there with you in the catching and release too. I'm far to much of a wimp! The sweep method sounds brill but I'm to scared to do that too! Can't even Hoover them up cause I'm too scared to be holding the Hoover whist they get sucked up! Even though I know it's dead im too scared to go upstairs now! And desperately need to tidy/clean the bedroom I need to get a grip! . Roll on conker season!

Definitely no to hoovering them. The hoover has to be emptied and I can't deal with dusty spiders at that point.

Spiders don't bother me but the ones in our conservatory were causing problems. Huge webs that I couldn't clear and then dropping the corpses of their dinner all over the place. Plus, there were several false widows which got some over the top reactions from some friends.

I sprayed the roofline with Spiderex (got mine from Amazon). Amazing stuff! No spiders in my conservatory since we sprayed it LAST AUGUST!

Still those webs you described Glad you got it sorted. I have never heard of Spiderex. The stupid thing is that I'm too scared to even look for it on Amazon in case there are pictures of spiders. I'm a bloody wimp and a completely lost cause, aren't I?

Ive checked , no pictures of spiders on Amazon... this stuff is brilliant. It is used in smoke detectors and suchlike to stop insects causing problems.

I've been on Mumsnet for nearly 20 years and I've posted this many times before so if you've read it already, sorry! I used to be phobic of spiders, not a bit euww or a bit not very keen, actual full hyperventilation, panic attack, started to affect my everyday life. I'm not anymore, at all, spiders live amongst us now under the sofa, in the bath etc, occasionally Ds gets me to remove them from his bedroom if they bother him by being above his bed or the like but generally they just live with us and have names. If I need to remove them I catch them in my hands unless they are the real big fast type then with a glass and card. Once I removed a whopper from DS's bed in my bare hands as it was crawling over his sheet whilst he slept so I had to just grab it - no bother. I went on the friendly spider programme at London zoo around 12 years ago and it literally changed my life, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone if you want to be cured. If you can't get to London find a good local hypnotherapist to help you. You don't have to live with this fear forever.

Ghost - I'm so sorry for your loss, before I got sorted I used to live in fear of my dh going away overnight in case there was a spider so I can imagine how terrible you must be feeling just with this one aspect of losing your dh, please get some help with this, I promise it will make a huge difference

I don't mind spiders at all, but have just discovered the perfect spider catcher - our cat. Drastic measure perhaps, but if you have a cat you won't have many spiders!

Enid I have 2 cats! Both bloody hopeless! One cat hates spiders. Literally. And the others always out!

I have two kittens. They've already caught one. My three year old caught one today and we put it on the fence outside. While I held her hand and kept my screams inside!!! Don't want to pass my fear on!!

No. In all seriousness, as Autumn starts to come, conkers placed in the corners of your room genuinely does work to keep them away!! I have no idea why, but it does!

I am an Aussie and VERY familiar with spiders. (Bloody creepy things) They don't like lemon oil. If you put lemon oil on a cloth and rub it around every doorway, every window (and any other openings) you can stop them from coming in. You will have to remove (murder) those that are already inside and remove all webs and nests.

I am the same! I can barely Hoover them or squash with a book or shoe because I go into meltdown about touching them even indirectly!! If I do Hoover them up (or get someone else to..) I have to tape up the end of Hoover.

I use conkers in my bedroom and touch wood they've worked. Have seen huge ones downstairs and in the garden..

I'm gonna book into one of those hypnotherapy courses.

Black widows aren't that big a deal, I remember my dad kicking one around with his shoe.

I don't understand MNers fussing over killing a snail (disgusting, eat my food & nice garden plants) but bloodthirsty attitude about spiders (harmless in UK, easy to catch alive & put out).

I too have disvovered the Spider-ex spray from Amazon! It is great stuff! Spray it outside windows, doors, corners, anywhere you think they might come in. We used to have quite a lot of spiders this time of year, now I rarely see them at all inside. I keep a bottle of the stuff in the cupboard, and spray around every few months, more often in the autumn. It works!

Get some peppermint oil and dilute it but so you can still smell if and wipe the windowsills, door frames and skirting boards as well as any vent covers. They hate it and it helps stop them coming in.

Completely not the same as your situation but my spider phobia was so bad I nearly didn't divorce because I was worried about spider dispensing... I have however since my very necessary divorce discovered this and it has revolutionised my life. Available on eBay for £9 for 3.
