To change baby's food because the smell turns my stomach?

Changed my formula-fed baby's food this week on advice from the HV (DC was originally on hypoallergenic milk but doesn't need it any more). I chose Hipp as it comes highly recommended and it does seem to suit DC very well indeed.

However, the smell of it absolutely turns my stomach. It's okay on the way in, but in whatever format it comes back out it's just horrific.

So, WIBU to change a milk that so clearly suits my DC for my own selfish reason?

What do you expect baby poo to smell like?

You could try another brand if you want to

What are you going to do when the baby is on solid food? Only feed him stuff that doesn't result in smelly poo??

It should settle down in a few days. It's probably the change that's causing the issue rather than the new formula itself.

It depends. Ime baby poo shouldn't smell really bad until they are eating solids, even formula fed baby poo would be yellow colour and shouldn't smell awful.

So it depends if the babies poos are normal.

One formula was giving my baby smelly hard green poo so we switched to another brand and he went back to normal.

Weaning poo turns your stomach regardless so the change may not even make a lasting difference.

Also changing might cause some constipation which happened to my DD1.

I use aptamil and never had a problem. You are usually discouraged from switching formula too many times though. How old is your DC. Can you not just wait until the not really needed follow on milk and get a different brand?
As other pp have said, what happens when they are on solids? I have changed a nappy from a weened child and it is gross. Your going to have to suck up the smell sooner or later

I have no problem with the smell of poo at all. It's the smell of poo and especially of regurgitation from the new formula that bothers me!

It's probably grim mostly because it's different. I also quite like the smell of formula baby poo (cow and gate). The sick is a bit yuck but seemed nicer once he was on ranitidine (there was a lot of sick)!!

Peppa DC is two months.

Her poo is looking great and I've no doubt the formula suits her.

Well you can't guarantee you'll be ok with the smell even if you change the milk.

Wait until your baby is on solids and teething, those poos are eye-watering.

It's poo, it's never going to smell of roses.

Unless it's abnormal then I believe the advice is not to switch formulas too often.

We liked Hipp. DH refused to feed DD cow and gate because he thought it smelled like a dustbin.

She regurgitated about half an hour ago onto her bedsheets and despite DH cleaning and changing her and me changing her sheets, it still smells rancid. DH can't smell anything.

Alternatively you could come to my house where I've 3 in nappies, including DTs who eat like horses and are teething mad.

I guarantee you'd be running home to your milk-only poos! Wink

Honestly though, all first infant milks are pretty much the same. They're quite tightly regulated.

I'm not looking forward to nappy changes when we start weaning then Grin

I know it'd be best for DC to stay on this formula especially as I'm clearly the only one who has a problem with it. Just such a shame when her previously sweet breath now makes me cringe.

I do know what you mean, ds had Aptimal but we tried him on Aptimal comfort because he was a bit colicky, it made his breathe stink of fish.

No you really, really haven't. As long as your baby is happy and healthy, carry on doing what's right for you and her, including changing brands if that's what works for you.

There's always a few one in particular breast feeding twat who'll come on these threads to offer their extremely helpful advice. Ignore them. They have their own agenda which in no way has you or your baby's best interests at heart.
