To think I really fucked up this college interview

So I had an interview for a pre-university course today. I'm usually good at interviews (I have a friend who works for a very prestigious company, who jokes that she'd love to interview me, because I've gotten almost every job I've ever interviewed for, including some that I shouldn't haven't even gotten through to the interview stage for because I was not experienced enough). I've worked for some very well known companies and organisations, including a high end travel company, a very high end property company, a well known online auction company, and a prestigious medical university. So basically, I've always been good at interviews.

But today I tanked. I've been out of education for years (am 31), it was terrifying. I stumbled over my words, had to pause to think for ages to reply to questions. At one point, the woman working away on the computer in the corner of the room actually turned around and gave me a sympathetic smile. I'm gutted. There are 65 people competing for 10 places. The woman interviewing me looked utterly unimpressed. I'm kicking myself. Will find out tomorrow of I got a place, not holding my breath.

Oh god. This is reminding me of when I was in the finals of a moot at law school, and fucked up royally. That feeling of sympathetic 'You poor thing' glances was tangible.

Flowers Good luck, let us know how you went. You may surprise yourself!

I totally know how you feel. I had 3 interviews in a month for Uni places. The first, I could barely speak. I was tongue tied and stumbled over my own name when introducing myself. The 2nd wasn't as bad as that but still terrible, I didn't get a place offered for either of those. The 3rd, I was late because of terrible traffic then nearly had a panic attack I was so nervous. The lady interviewer was lovely though, realised I was nervous and helped put me at ease. It took 2 weeks to find out but I got a place. 3000 applicants for 240 places. Hopefully you haven't done as bad as you think you did.

Good luck-it might not be as bad as you think. I've got an interview next week and it's a job I'm absolutely qualified for, I have more than enough experience so on paper I'm ideal but I just can't stop worrying about the interview Sad

Let us know if you get it op and try not to worry.

Oh thank feck, I'm in Grin. Got the call at 9.02, was preparing to hold my phone in my grubby paw waiting for it to ring all day! Thanks so much for the lovely encouraging posts. It's very stressful, isn't it? Champagne, best of luck with the interview Flowers

Haha op, you sound like me. In my 30's, can only think of two jobs that I interviewed for and didn't get. Baffles me, but I suppose I'm quite good at bs on the spot. One interview I thought went terribly and I still got it.
An old boss told me I got the job as I was the only candidate who spoke clearly, and looked her in the eye, so sometimes it's not that I was great just that everyone else was so poor Grin

Nice one Koala, enjoy!

Thanks a million, MadameCholets. Now I need to establish a new track record of getting amazing grades, as the University course that I want to apply for is quite competitive. Will be spending my weekend doing lots of reading so I'm well prepared for starting on Tuesday Smile.

I totally fucked up my college interview. Didn't get a place. So just applied to another college ... no interview and got a place straight away. Finished close to top and I'm just about to enter my third year with a 79% average.

Interviews don't always give you the best chance to shine. Its a flawed system.

Even if you don't get a place just try somewhere else don't give up.

Fair play to you Sofa. Sounds like you're doing brilliantly! The course is Nursing Studies, hoping to use it to get into a Midwifery degree. Really looking forward to just getting stuck in and working my arse off Grin. What are you studying?

Well done on getting on the course!
Having a difficult interview may have really helped if you are planning to apply for midwifery. The application process is brutal and you need to be able to really stand out from other applicants just to get an interview. There is absolutely no room for nerves or silly mistakes as competition is so high.

I really recommend getting Ellie Durants book, Becoming A student midwife. There's lots of tips and strategies to help with the application/ interview process.
Good luck!

Well done! When I had my access course interview I was all geared up for giving the best interview ever and it went like this....

Tutor: what are you hoping to study at university?

Me: midwifery

Tutor: ok so you need to do biology yes?

Me: yes I believe so

Tutor: ok I'll put you down for biology, you can choose your other 2 subjects later. You will get a letter with your start date and timetable soon.

Me: oh Thankyou, so does that mean I have a place?

Tutor: yes.

My university interview process was much more intense than that!
