AIBU?

To scream in frustration because I cannot eat meat?

I'll probably be hugely outted by this as I've never met anyone who suffers the same I can feel a NC coming on
But I feel so frustrated. I posted on a thread about this but just want to get some opinions etc on the situation so decided fuck it may as well post one of my own.
Unsure if relevant but my mums a vegetarian (By choice) Father isn't. As a baby I was weaned on whatever everyone else was having, by large. so I'd have bits off my dads plate, and my mums. Eating off my dads plate 9/10 meant I was sick. Or just gagged and wouldn't swallow it, even if the chunks of food were manageable. By the time I was 3 and starting nursery the nursery staff had the same issue with me. If the food I ate was meat or came into contact with a large amount of meat oil/fat (the latter causing a lot less problems than the former) They reported this to my mum over a fortnight. Mum took me to the doctors.
Doctor suggested I just didn't like meat and said to tell if thats the case (or if its a psychological thing somehow) to 'spike' my food somewhat. which my mum did. I failed to detect anything wrong with each meal, Threw up each time(Spiked me 3 times) . When we went to my doctors appointment again he said Oh well she's in good health just make sure you give her these food groups and make sure she gets such and such vitamins.. righty-o then. Throughout my life I've attempted to go to the doctors but have been told much of the same really. That I'm in good health, get what I need from my diet and what do I want them to do? Well, find out WHY I'm chundering within no more than 90 mins of eating meat.
Still to this day I try a bit of meat off DH's plate, sometimes DH will 'spike' me again with meat, and conceal it with quorn and a strong-ish flavor (like a garlic sauce) which results in me puking. But I want to eat meat. This has been going on for years and years, since I was a baby/toddler really.
No one understands as being allergic to all (white and red) meat is not a recognized allergy, but to my understanding you can be allergic to red meat. But again that isn't really known, so at a restaurant there is always one dickhead there that bangs on and on and on about how its impossible, how I should just 'try a bit' and I'll be fine. A couple of times this has ended in me giving in and puking by the time we're ready to leave and probably offending a chef or three. I do try to say I'm a vegetarian nowadays and some people fancy arguing it with me (How its daft to be a tree hugger yadayadayada...) which is annoying as its not my choice but I feel I cannot say that as there is always one person who thinks I'm talking out of my ass basically.
AIBU to just want to scream in frustration with this? :(

By the way, I DO like meat until its coming back up the wrong way. Then I curse whatever bit of steak/bit of chicken/mince I've just eaten.

I think you need to get used to it.
Make sure nobody tricks you again though - that is really silly & infantile.

Hmmm..... interesting

Bit off the wall but I'd try a hypnotherapy session as I'm wondering if you've unknowingly picked up a psychological issue from early childhood

If you like it going down but your body expels it, it doesn't automatically mean that it's a physical reaction but possibly a delayed psychological reaction

I have a friend who is allergic to meat- started as an adult though with chicken, now she can't eat any meat without vomiting. It's not just you! Is there any reason why you can't just eat vegetarian food? That's what my friend does.

Stevefromstevenage · 30/08/2016 13:52

I know someone who is seriously allergic (not intolerant) to chicken so it is possible that you just cannot tolerate protein(s) in various meats.

Is the problem that you like the taste of meat and miss being able to eat it? Or more that you find it frustrating that your condition is not recognised?

At this point you really need to make your peace with it and stop getting people to 'spike' you. There are plenty of alternatives to be getting on with.

I can't scroll up to the PP who said it (On a phone with a mind of its own!) but I asked DH to sneak it into my food so if it is or has become a more mental reaction then I should be fine, I never detect it but I always vomit within an hour and a half. Without fail. :(
I've tried beef, pork, fish, chicken, Various types/cuts cooked in different ways sometimes I'm aware of it, sometimes I'm not(at my own request). Some canned, some frozen, some fresh.

I have a friend who is similar..i dont think you are my friend though haha. My brother used to throw up after fish, everytime whether he could taste it or not, anyway he didn't eat it for maybe 5 years. Then tried some again and ever since hes been fine, maybe its psychological?
I think your probably just going to have to say your vegetarian/pescatarian. Anyone who's twat enough to argue is not really a friend tbh.

Just don't eat meat, you obviously have an intolerance, no more unfair then any other. Peanuts will kill my friend by I have never found her screaming in frustration over it.

It's a shame as you obviously would like it in your diet but that's life, the animals will thank you Grin

The people you're eating with are dicks. YANBU to be frustrated with their stupid comments.

My advice would be to say you don't eat meat and leave it at that... but then vegetarians get equally stupid comments (as you probably know from your mum).

I don't know... no advice, just sympathy from me.

Have you been checked for intestinal parasites? They can do weird things to digestion.

When was the last time you saw a gp about it? If it was when you was younger then I'd go to the gp and ask them to check you out and possibly run some tests to see if they can figure it out.

Report
Cocklodger · 30/08/2016 13:58

Some people are dicks about it but I'm not about to start an awareness campaign or demanding a change of rules for just one person. So not that I want it widely recognized, its being fobbed off my doctors rather than any effort to figure out why it is I'm 'allergic' to meat.
The 'get used to it' comments annoy me too, I guess they're just trying to help but I cannot get used to it. I try to eat meat at least a few times a month, sometimes I'm aware of it sometimes I'm not. Every time I throw it up. you'd think over my lifetime I'd have gotten used to it by now, surely, if that was the issue?
It is frustrating because 1. Doctors don't believe me and fob me off. 2. I do enjoy meat(when aware its meat) until I throw it up again. 3. We can afford quorn and the like quite easily but its still annoying that you can get a can of hot dogs at about 60p and I have to pay about £3 for 2 bags of significantly smaller hot dogs. When I really don't want to.

I saw a GP aged about 3/4, then again at 11, then again shortly before turning 16 and three times more since going into adulthood. Most recent being last year.
Everytime I get fobbed off with ''Well what do you expect me to do? You're relatively healthy...'' And when I do ask for it to be looked into more for a reason/diagnosis or even educated guess to be given and maybe even a treatment of some kind, Then I get fobbed off again. Generally with monetary reasons cited (NHS) or with, well do you really NEED the tests? You're fine.

Op I know how you feel. I am allergic to several foods That make me vomit regardless of wether I know it's there or not.

Rice is the worst of them. I can't eat rice in any shape or form. If I have anything with rice flour in, I am sick. Even if I don't know it's there. I ended up really ill a few months ago as I never thought to check a packet of cookies and ate four. Within a few hours I was laid out on the bathroom floor.

I have to check everything I eat as rice flour is used a filler in a lot things now.

However I do think Yabu about the doctors. You are confident you can't eat it allergic to it. What is it you want the doctors to do?

They won't force it to be recognised as an official allergy and just advise you to stay away from meat.

As for people not believing you, I have been there too. Every Thai restaurant has insisted I can't possibly be allergic to rice. after a couple of minutes of restaurant staff going on I give the hard stare and say 'I don't eat rice' . They then leave me alone.

If I am eating out and someone I am with starts, My response is ' of course you are right...I just imagine throwing up' or 'shut the fuck up'. Tends to work Grin

Well, I think your later posts are a bit unreasonable. You know you can't tolerate meat, so what do you think will change if you get an official diagnosis? The treatment is obvious: stop eating meat a few times a month!

Well, someone above has mentioned parasites, if that is the issue, or there is a similar issue, then maybe it CAN be treated?
It would be nice to know why I have such a random allergy that no one else I've met (save for a couple of similar people on this thread) has even heard of, even if it cannot be treated.

It does sound like an intolerance so I would just embrace being a vegetarian. So many people seem to be vegetarian anyway and no one questions it at all. I am surprised you even want to eat it if it makes you ill.

I think it's reasonable to be annoyed with the doctors. If they don't know what's causing it how can they know it's incurable? Not eating meat at all is not straightforward to do. Granted, nor is it life-threatening, but then neither are the colds and sniffles that consume most GPs' time all winter (and the colds and sniffles mostly aren't curable since they're viruses).

I have developed allergies after having each of my children, I get a lot of eye rolls about it but it's true, DS1 was codine, after having him I can't take it without suffering several days of throwing up until I start producing blood, DS2 was Duck meat, DS3 was fresh Fennel and DD was shellfish all have the same thing, about 30 mins after eating these foods that o have eaten all my life quit happily I start being sick and it doesn't stop for days and days until I'm hospitalised, drs have just shrugged and said not to eat the foods as it's a sudden onset allergy and o treat it like an allergy from birth.

"Not eating meat at all is not straightforward to do. "

On the contrary, it's a piece of piss to be vegetarian in the UK these days.

I wonder if you can't break down meat proteins? Lots of people with a largely vegetarian lifestyle struggle with it if they return to meat eating, I believe, although it's not hugely common overall and I'm not sure there's a cure. It'd probably be treated as an intolerance and you'd be advised to avoid meat.

Report
BalloonSlayer · 30/08/2016 14:16

First thing is, it's not an allergy its an intolerance. [sigh]

You probably are lacking in the enzymes needed to digest meat, I would speculate that this is because you didn't have enough as a small child to develop production of them. Or maybe it's genetic - lactose intolerance can be? This may be of interest, I know it says eating disorder but that's not what I think you have.

Sorry I do think Yabu. I am allergic to rice, oats, milk and range of other things just because I am.

If you genuinely think you have had parasites your entire life but completely unaffected in any other way, ask to be tested. But they are unlikely to find a cause. The NHS isn't an endless pile of lonely.

Being allergic to stuff sucks. I get it. But you can easily solve this yourself by stopping trying to eat meat.

I desperately miss the foods I am not allowed to have. But the doctor can't change that.
