Husband being a numpty! Kids making fairy cakes, we make them all the time. I usually supervise baking and make cakes, husband is an enthusiastic eater of said cakes.

Numpty husband told the kids not to put paper cases into the bun tin before filling with batter as they would "definitely burn". Result = cakes stuck to tin, pissed off kids, me running to shop for more butter. How can you get to your mid 40s, live with someone who bakes for 20 years and NOT KNOW HOW CAKE CASES WORK???

DH is 48 and his idea of cake making is buying one from Tesco

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington Sat 27-Aug-16 16:05:42

Perfectly easy to make it to 100 and not have a scooby how to make cakes.

But to not realise that the the raw mixture goes into the cases and then the oven.......well...............did you marry him for his body rather than his brains?

wigglesrock Sat 27-Aug-16 16:07:26

Tbh I'm 42 and I couldn't & more importantly wouldn't want to make a cake but I'd know that making buns requires bun cases.

YABU

Get him some silicon cake cases for next time.

ThoraGruntwhistle Sat 27-Aug-16 16:12:21

He thought you cooked them in the tin and put them in cases afterwards? confused Did he never wonder how the cake is always moulded to the shape of the paper case?

LunaLoveg00d Sat 27-Aug-16 16:19:13

This is an intelligent man who holds down a responsible job - and who doesn't know you put cake cases in tins before cooking cakes. I honestly think he walks around with his eyes closed half the time. My 10 year old was trying to tell him he was wrong but he was having none of it - have told him to defer to her obviously superior knowledge next time!

The actual baking bit I get. It's not everyone's bag and shop bought cakes are often very good. But the paper case thing has got me boggled!!

I have no idea and I'm 39.

Baking is a completely pointless activity!

honeyroar Sat 27-Aug-16 16:21:14

I'm a reasonably good cook in day to day life and make most of our meals, but I can't remember the last time I made a cake. I'd have no clue.

chocoLit Sat 27-Aug-16 16:23:42

Baking is completely pointless? Brilliant response gringrincake

LunaLoveg00d Sat 27-Aug-16 16:25:34

How can baking be pointless when the end result is cake??

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington Sat 27-Aug-16 16:27:55

Standing on one leg for an hour is pointless. A loaf of bread is a point.

VeryBitchyRestingFace Sat 27-Aug-16 16:34:22

I'm approaching 38 and I don't have a clue.

I'm a culinary disaster generally though. Thank Godot for M&S ready meals.

SueTrinder Sat 27-Aug-16 16:35:29

Standing on one leg for an hour is pointless.

Nah, that's Yoga.

I wish I thought baking was pointless, I wouldn't need to exercise quite so much.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington Sat 27-Aug-16 16:35:38

Very Beckettian!

VeryBitchyRestingFace Sat 27-Aug-16 16:35:59

I don't like cake. I like crisps.

Even if you do like cake, surely that's what bakeries and cake shops are for, innit? confused

Here, have some cake

My DH once surprised me by announcing he was making me a birthday cake. All by himself. hmm

He presented it a few hours later and I was a little shell shocked. I knew he had all the right stuff because i had snooped earlier ( all Betty Crocker ) .... He had only gone and put the fudge icing on....PRE BAKE grin

" I thought it was hard work spreading it on batter" grin

MeAndMy3LovelyBoys Sat 27-Aug-16 16:40:52

I think I'm ok for now then... I have about 20 years to learn grin

WorraLiberty Sat 27-Aug-16 16:42:15

I don't eat cake

I don't bake cakes

I couldn't tell you a single recipe off the top of my head.

But even I know the mixture goes in cases grin

LunaLoveg00d Sat 27-Aug-16 16:42:37

He had only gone and put the fudge icing on....PRE BAKE

I think that beats not knowing how to use cake cases!! How was the cake?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington Sat 27-Aug-16 16:46:51

He baked the icing?!

grin

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington Sat 27-Aug-16 16:47:20

Spreading icing on wet cake batter is quite the achievement!

MilkTwoSugarsThanks Sat 27-Aug-16 16:49:54

I've never baked a cake in my life... but even I know cake mix goes in cases in the oven and icing goes on after baking!

Is you DH drunk?????

GreatFuckability Sat 27-Aug-16 16:53:43

i'm grin at baking the icing!!! brilliant!

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere Sat 27-Aug-16 16:58:12

grin I tried some out of politeness and it wasn't bad - kind of like a fudge brownie. His " defence" was that it wasn't like normal icing - so how was he too know confused

I promise he's not usually this incompetent grin
