To change my sons surname

(Not new to Mumsnets, been a long term lurker) I really need help - I've spoken to a few friends in real life but they just think I'm being bizarre, hopefully I can get some help on here but I really don't know where to start... Right I am 4 months pregnant I have been with my new partner for 3 years introduced him to my 3 children just over a year ago, I have two DSs 12 and 19 and DD 19 twins (all have the same dad) I have been separated from their dad for 8 years now (but we are still married) he has never really bothered with the boys, DS 19 doesn't speak to him DS 12 doesn't know him, he has NEVER really bothered with the boys him and DD have a great relationship she is his favourite and he would never deny it. My new partner absolutely adores my 12 year old, they get on very well, a few weeks ago we had a talk and he said he doesn't mind bringing up DS12 as his own, I had a separate talk with DS12 and basically asked him if he would like my partner to be his dad, he said yes so he now calls him "DAD" he said he would like to make it official by putting DS12 in his surname, as the new baby will be going in his surname. Please be honest with me, do you think what I am doing is wrong? - Please bear in mind that DS12 doesn't have any contact with his biological father. TIA
