WWYD - Pay or not for meal we did an (unintentional) runner on

We got back yesterday from ten days away in the UK. We spent Sunday night in a Premier Inn before driving back yesterday and went for breakfast in the adjoining pub (you know the one that's affiliated with the PI) before leaving.

Anyway, we've just been talking about the trip in general, the P Inn breakfast was mentioned and we've just realised we didn't actually pay for it. We think it was £19 (for two adults, kids eat free)...we strolled in and got shown to a table then upped and left when we were done Blush.

In our defence, this was the third hotel we'd stayed in on that trip and with the others breakfast was included, so it just didn't seem to occur to either of us to pay. The waitress happily waved us out as we left so it obviously didn't occur to her either!

Dh think's it would be silly to call them now...this P Inn is about 350 miles from where we live so popping in to pay isn't an option and dh thinks calling them over less than £20 is stupid and we should leave it. I feel really bad though and guilty and ridiculous Hmm...WWYD?

I would ring and pay by credit card or send a cheque. Some poor bugger of a waitress has probably been made to pay for your meal.

PinkyOfPie · 23/08/2016 20:19

I would call them, but then I'm a worrier!

phillipp · 23/08/2016 20:20

I would pay. As po said it's possible someone has had to pay for it.

phillipp · 23/08/2016 20:20

Pp not po Grin

SomedayBaby · 23/08/2016 20:20

Really neolara...I can't imagine the PI would make their wait staff pay for people that skip, surely?!?

Call them and pay.

ApocalypseSlough · 23/08/2016 20:21

Waitresses often have to pay for runners. Call them.

NeedACleverNN · 23/08/2016 20:22

Everyone will tell you to pay

If I am being completely honest, I wouldn't pay now and would chalk it up as a lesson learned but that's me

maggiethemagpie · 23/08/2016 20:24

I wouldn't pay, I'd see it as Premier Inn's fault for not checking, usually they check your room number off a list if it's pre paid. I probably have low morals though.

Watto1 · 23/08/2016 20:24

Are you certain it hasn't been taken off your credit card? Usually The breakfast goes on whatever card you paid for your room with.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 23/08/2016 20:26

I would and did in a similar situation at f&b's. Dh and I both thought the other had paid when we were doing divide and conquer toilet runs with 4 dc. As it was a place we like to go to frequently, we did ring and explain, and paid by card over the phone as we weren't going to be that way for a while to pay cash. They offered us a free drink for our honesty next time we were in as they couldn't work out why their till was short.

a member of staff could have been accused of stealing and lost their job simply because we hadn't paid. So it depends on your conscience I guess...

Ladymayormaynot · 23/08/2016 20:27

Let it go , I wouldn't worry about it. It's usually a real hassle for shops to put through payments at a later date. If it's really bothering you make a donation to a charity instead. I forgot the bar bill recently but OH remembered however they did have credit card details so I'm sure they would have charged to that.

Mybugslife · 23/08/2016 20:28

I'd 100% pay. It's basically stealing and isn't right. If it was your kids that did that would you tell them to pay?

I've once done that at a bar fairly local to us, you pay after when you leave as they take drinks orders at the table. I walked out, no one realised I got home and suddenly thought oh no I didn't pay and felt awful so got a taxi back to the bar and paid my bill.

neolara · 23/08/2016 20:29

Um, yes, waiting staff often have to pay if clients do a runner.

Missgraeme · 23/08/2016 20:29

Have u got short hair and does your dh wear specs? Think I have just seen u on crimestoppers!!!

Trifleorbust · 23/08/2016 20:30

I might pay - it would depend on my mood 😂

ifyoulikepinacolada · 23/08/2016 20:31

I'd ring and check - they'll probably say it's fine but as a waitress I had a couple of runners' meals come out of communal tips!

GettingScaredNow · 23/08/2016 20:32

Worked as a waitress for many years.
I never once had to pay for people who skipped out.

I would call and pay, because that's the right thing to do.

SomedayBaby · 23/08/2016 20:32

Definitely wouldn't have been taken off the card Watto...when we walked in, the waitress asked if we were booked in (meaning already paid for with the PI room) and we said no, but that was it. They wouldn't have even know that we had stayed in the PI, never mind who we were.

Nishky · 23/08/2016 20:34

I would pay. I used to meet a friend in a coffee shop where you paid on order - once it was full so we went somewhere else where you didn't.

I went back and paid the next day.

DurhamDurham · 23/08/2016 20:34

Years ago I had a second job in Pizza Hut to help me pay for my driving lessons and test. One evening a table of four did a runner and the entire cost of the meal came out of my wages which meant that I worked for nothing that night.
To say I was pissed off is an understatement.

BastardBernie · 23/08/2016 20:34

I wouldn't worry about it honestly.

Would be easy to make myself out to be a better person and say pay. But I agree with your DH in this case tbh. Also if staff were made to pay for people who didn't pay, they wouldn't be allowing you to leave without paying thats for sure, they would keep a hawks eye on each of their tables just incase.

EvansOvalPies · 23/08/2016 20:35

Let it go , I wouldn't worry about it. It's usually a real hassle for shops to put through payments at a later date
How do you come to that conclusion, Ladymayormaynot ?

Of course you should call them and pay, OP. is this yet another wind-up thread with idiot posters on school hols? FFS

mineofuselessinformation · 23/08/2016 20:35

Why would you not want to pay - you ate the food didn't you? Hmm
Or did you think it was free???
