Was in the supermarket earlier and a woman asked her friend to get her some butter - but "a brand, none of that cheap shite".

What is wrong with own brand? :( Sometimes/Mostly that's all I can afford! Isn't it all the same food anyway?

Meh, I've never seen an issue- I refuse to pay more for most things when own brand is just as good, if not nicer!

Sometimes it's the same or better. Sometimes it's not. We always get own brand butter, but know people who don't like it.

It's their money, they can spend on what they want.

I think it is really, but without the influence of the cute jingle on the commercial ringing in your ears when you spy it on the shelf, hence less perceived glamour and quality.

I like own brand stuff.

It all looks so neat lined up with matching labels.

Besides, it's all made in the same factory by the same people. It's the same stuff...

Some things are the same but not all, especially with animal produce. I buy kerrygold butter because it's from grass fed cows(apparently) which is supposed to be better for you. If things were a bit tight, as they are sometimes, I'd but the supermarkets own brand one and not think much about it really!

where butter is concerned i sit on both fences when asda has lurpak spreadable at £3 for a huge tub i get that when its £6 a tub i get aldis own version, but have to admit the lurpak does taste better, everything else i get from aldi and their quality is equal too and a lot cheaper than asdas

Own brand cornflakes are not like Kelloggs, own brand baked beans are not like Heinz, own brand detergent is not like Persil. I've used all of them, and will no doubt buy them again, but in some cases the brnaded product is better.

In many cases the own brand is as good as - or even better - than the branded product, IMO. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences

Nope, I mostly buy own brand, sometimes value and sometimes brands/finest, you soon learn what is worth paying for or not. I like Lurpak myself and decent coffee, but prefer value biscuits. For every one person curling their lip at someone's 'cheap shite' someone else will be curling theirs at someone's extravagance.

Most own brand stuff is just as nice. Bachellors Pasta 'n' Sauce packets aren't as nice as the Aldi version though.

I worked for a well known brand once and supermarkets would pay more to have it branded with their own name. So there you go! Same product different packaging.

I agree with the OP - we all have a choice, and I buy the 'cheap shit' because I can't tell the difference (but then I am rather tasteless ), but the woman in the supermarket was rude and obnoxious.

Where do some people think the own labels come from, the reject factory in the corner? Hovis make bread for tesco lidl aldi m&s, the 45/50p thick stuff in orange paper.

You only have to watch shows like "Eat Well for Less" to see that own brand often performs just as well - often better - than expensive brands in blind testing.

It's a matter of personal taste, it's wrong to to say that all brands are good and all own brand is rubbish. Often the own brand products are made on the same production line and with the same ingredients, often the own brands are better for you as they have less added sugar/salt - the woman on Eat Well for Less last night was buying Special K and was shocked to discover that Asda smart price bran flakes are lower in calories, less sugar, less salt and twice the fibre.

Buying branded medicines IS madness though - supermarket own brand ibuprofen is EXACTLY the same as branded Nurofen. I suppose you could argue that with child's paracetamol suspensions that branded Calpol tastes different to the Asda, Boots or Tesco version, but the active ingredients are identical.

My friend tried to convince me that Asdas own ice cream and donuts are the same as Krispy Kreme and Ben n jerrys.... Just not in the same league.

I don't agree that it's the same stuff at all.

Of course it's the right thing to shop according to your budget but there are huge differences in quality between branded and budget products.

I've tried shopping at budget supermarkets numerous times and have always ended up going back to the supermarkets I know are reliably good. They're cheap for a reason imo.

They refuse to buy anything non branded

I don't mind. The only thing I need branded is my Heinz ketchup

Some of the own brand products are made by the same manufacturers that produce the branded ones.

There are some things that make no difference or at least I can't tell the difference wether branded or not e,g Salt.

I shop at Morrisons and it makes me happy to be able to buy a jar of sauce and bag of pasta for a WEEK'S lunch which totals 58p :)
