AIBU?

Why post online a photo of your ill child when you check in to the local hospital??

Just why??? If you need help, your phone obviously works, text someone FGS

I don't understand it, my (older, preteen) DC would be mortified.

AIBU to think it is all about mummy getting attention, not the ill child.

Flame away

No.
It's for attention.

I don't like it ..it screams attention seeking and it's usually followed by 'you ok Hun?'
Omg hope everything's ok'
'Inbox me'

It's wanky and annoying

I don't get it. My DD is going in for a tonsillectomy in a few weeks and the last thing on my mind would be getting a good photo op. Mind some people I follow on instagram have put up pictures of them and their kids in ambulances selfie style Shock

Or its to let relatives know without having to contact them all individually? trying to be charitable

glitterwhip has it I think. It doesn't smack of being useful or helpful for the child at all and seems calculated solely to draw out the hun brigade.

Totally for parental attention.

But then again, so are all photos of kids posted on social media.

I'm just glad it wasn't around when I was a kid. Some poor kids literally can't take a shit in the potty or open a Christmas present without having a camera thrust in the face.

Perhaps it is to let people know but you can actually group message people on Facebook privately so if it was that important to let people know I'd prefer to do it that way than to have my ill child on display for a bunch of randoms ..but each to their own

I have a family member who does this all the time. She 'checks in' to the local hospital and puts something very vague like "with (insert name of one of her DC) going to be a long night (sad face)" and then doesn't reply to the concerned comments that follow. It always turns out to be something very, very trivial that most people would not dream of going to A&E for in the first place. Even when one of her kids has a bit of a tummy bug she will post photos of them lying on the sofa with a sick bowl. I feel sorry for the DC.

I don't have FB so not sure what this 'check in' shit is?

I'm trying to be charitable, but why would distant relatives need to know?

I've had DC have emergency ops before now unfortunately, the last thing I thought about was updating fb & others with every detail.

I just don't understand it, but I'm 40 & was wondering if I'm just behind the current thoughts on this

Crunchy, you 'checks in' to a location to let people know where you are at that time (might be cinema, restaurant, airport) but to be honest I don't really understand why people do it either. Always strikes me as a good way to advertise an empty house to anyone who might be looking to burgle you.

Yes pudding!!!

My DH step sister is the worst for that, she's always away with work, lives alone and is always updating FB announcing she's away. I really don't understand the need and I worry that one day she'll be burgled

You'd think that Facebook would be the last thing on your mind, when. Your child was in hospital. Why are people so obsessed. Some one please enlighten me as to what is so amazing about this famous Facebook. I'm intrigued

It is because they are wankers. I don't care who comes along to say, oh it's for extra support, or they are passing time or its to let people know without having to ring/text lots of people. No its not. It's because you are an attention seeking asshole. Can you tell I hate this? And yes, you can block/delete but you can bet that 99% of other people that see that status are thinking the same thing. If you want people to know, use private messages or WhatsApp or use the phone to make a phone call! There is literally no reason apart from attention seeking to do this.

I'm just feeling thankful that I don't know anyone who does this. Is it common?

The only reason you would do this is if you're an attention seeking arsehole!!

Because some people have no real life. Just a virtual life with virtual friends. And think they are so important these vf need to know everything or they won't be vf anymore!!

Why the photo though?

If they can't remember what the kid looks like, they can't be that close to them.

I completely agree. Drives me crazy. So glad I'm not the only one thinking it is just attention seeking. Yes, the 'its going to be a tough night' posts are particularly awful.

On the other hand, there's a toddler in my area with terminal cancer. The community have really got behind the family. In their case, I think Facebook updates are totally appropriate. They probably help the parents to keep going.

No Shock I was sometimes quite ill as a kid and spent many a day/night with a sick bowl close at hand but I would have resented my parents ETERNALLY if they'd posted a picture of it on the internet. Holy hell.

APlaceOnTheCouch I just went back and counted 17 of these types of posts on my Facebook (business page so can't delete them, still willing to take their money even if they are wankersGrin)

And?

'And' it's not fair on the child to have the person they trust to look after them, plastering their private moments on the internet.

I wouldn't mind but most adults would throw a hissy fit if someone else took a photo of their kid...or even of them and uploaded it without their permission.

If they want to attention seek, let them start with their own private photos...
