Depends who said it!

It was a classmate! Probably early 20s.

Just last semester, people thought I was their age! I wonder how badly I aged in six months.

Do you mean 'short for Madame' or another word for mum?

Report
Crunchymum · 22/08/2016 10:52

I think you need to a) get a serious grip or b) ask for "lighthearted" to be added to the title.

American?

I died a bit inside when I was first ever called Madame. Made me realise I was no longer a girl.

It's short for "madam" I'd think.

Yes this is a lighthearted thread.

Haha. I was called Ma'am a few months ago. By a boy who works in McDonald's. I was outraged.
I'm only 25!

You mean Ma'm.

Mam would be what a Yorkshire man might call his Mother.

DP called me "ma'am" when I first knew him. He didn't make that mistake again Wink

I'd have loved it. Would have brought out my best Vera Stanhope impersonation.
A little lad in the supermarket walked along side me down an aisle, then ran ahead to the end. His mother was there and the little boy said "I beat that girl!" Girl! I'm old enough to be his great granny! I was chuffed he didn't call me a little old lady.

Maybe it's part of McD customer service training? I was also called madam by a young lad last time I went through a McD drive through. I got asked for ID trying to buy filter tips in Waitrose the same week though so in my mind the two have cancelled each other out and I'm in some magic space between young and old (or possibly deluded... aged 33)

Wait till you are out somewhere and someone says to their child 'mind that lady there' or 'that woman is next' rather than 'girl'. That's been happening to me for years and still gets me every time.

oh a young foreign girl in starbucks did this to me. she'd learned english in america i think and she was mamming away and yet couldn't give me my coffee in a real cup like i asked. I am embarrassed to say I said at the end ''you can stop calling me mam and you can give me that coffee in a real cup''. They did have them. It wasn't at the airport. I'd told her I wasn't having it to go.

I use mam for mum. If there is no distinction in how it's pronounced, how am I to know someone isn't calling me mum? Stupid queen didn't think that through, did she, huh? Grin

BurstBees · 22/08/2016 11:22

Aye, if it's good enough for me Mam then it's good enough for the Queen...
