Mocking Hearing Inpaired

To be quite shocked that after a member of the public had posted that they had found a hearing aid and hoped to re-unite it with it's owner.. Our local school's SEN teacher commented 'Pardon?'

It's not that funny but it's exactly the same as my DH saying his ears are blocked and me saying pardon. Not that funny but not a crime!

Start how is that the same? We are taking about a permanent disability someone has. And that teacher is responsible for supporting children with (amongst other things) that disability. The comment was on a Community social media page. I don't see the joke.

I'm profoundly deaf and wear hearing aids in both ears. It's exactly the kind of thing H or my DCs would say to me, ditto covering their mouth when they speak when they're winding me up. It's not something I get het up about, though I can understand why you're a bit that a SEN teacher has said it.

I don't think your being oversensitive.
I doubt she would have made a joke if it had been something to aid a blind person. Deaf people put up with an awful lot in terms of people thinking their disability something to be mocked.
I'm sure we'll now have lots people defending her, but if I had a deaf child she's the last person I would want to be an advocate for them.

Yes boogers I have friends who are hearing impaired, it's not the sort of joke that I would make but I know some people do and of course each to their own (as long as the recipient is ok with that. ). The fact it is a SEN teacher in a primary school saying that to the local community doesn't seem at all funny to me.

I don't find it funny when I tell people I'm hearing impaired and they say "what" and laugh. Mainly because my being deaf doesn't affect their hearing.

However, in the case of losing hearing aids all jokes amuse me.

The joke is that the person is pretending that it's their hearing aid that's lost, but they can't hear your question because they've lost it. Probably works better verbally rather than written down. Arguably inappropriate but unlikely to be meant with malice. It's not mocking the person who the aid actually belongs to.

I am deaf (cochlear implant & hearing aid).

I don't find it very funny; but neither am I particularly bothered - it's just a bit, blah. Though perhaps a bit questionable coming from a SEN teacher.

I've encountered much, much worse!
