AIBU Courier broke our garage door!

AIBU to be furious...!?

I was out today with DS when I received a text to say that my parcel had been 'left in the garage'.

I thought it was strange as firstly, how would the courier get in the garage? Secondly, our garage door is electric and can only be opened from inside our home. Thinking it must be a mistake, I ignored it.

When I got home there was a slip through the door, stating that the parcel was indeed in the garage. Our garage is attached to our house and we have no internal door to it.

I pressed the internal button and heard an almighty crunch from the garage door! I headed outside and the door was hanging off! It had been prised up from the bottom (it can be pulled open approx 15cm) when I got on my hands and knees, low and behold, there was the parcel inside the garage! The parcel contained two baby dressing gowns so was fairly bulky but must have been squeezed under. Our garage has our fridge and pram in it (amongst other things!) and were not accessible.

DH came back from work and managed to get the door open so I could get inside but it is now half open and not secured.

The courier does not have a phone number (Hermes) and can only be contacted via online chat or email. I've contacted them to be told they will get back to me in 48 hours! I'm so angry! AIBU??

Crikey - that is bad. This just beggars belief because forcing any locked garage door open will cause damage.

YANBU, but this isn't likely to be quick to work out - 98% of Hermes staff are self-employed so it will take a while.

As the door is broken and insecure, you need to alert your insurance company, if you haven't already. They will secure the garage and probably pursue the claim against Hermes.

It's criminal damage surely

Hermes are absolutely awful. They put my parcel in the bin on the day before bin day and I wasn't home until the following morning (night shift) and the bins had already been collected by the time I got home and thus my parcel went into the back of the bin truck or the bin men stole it

YANBU I would be fuming. Why would he think to open up someone's garage to leave a parcel?? IMO its the same as the other threads on here about the post men opening people's front doors to deliver parcels etc.

Contact the police on 101 (non-emergency obviously) and ask for advice

Apparently delivery drivers only get paid for one attempt, so they are probably getting more and more desperate to deliver first time. That is appalling. Agree with pp saying call your insurance company.

Tweet them repeatedly, Facebook them repeatedly and make a pest of yourself. That's appalling.

Also as others are suggesting it - it is not criminal damage.

Criminal damage is defined as damage caused with intent to cause said damage or recklessness. Opening a garage door is not reckless in anyway. Therefore it's classed as accidental damage and you need to complain to Hermes who should pay for the damage.

Contact the people/company that used Hermes to deliver your package. They will have the necessary insurance.

This happened to me with Hermes.

We have the garage full of the usual stuff bikes etc and it has the big pull up door and the side door, which is locked. We rarely use the big door as it is on it's last legs and likely to fall off it's hinges if opened.

But that's what the Hermes courier did with my parcel, which could have fit through the letter box if folded in half.

No idea why,

Farfrom... forcing open an electric door from the outside is reckless in my opinion. If the door was shut then they had no right to pry it open and leave it broken.

OP be like a dog with a bone...dont let them weazel out of it. They should be covered by insurance for any damage done.

Contact the shop who will be able to sort it with hermes for you. I work for a company who use them and we've had similar complaints. Hermes will pay for damages.

I rang 101 who said it was a civil matter and to contact Hermes or a solicitor. I'll definitely be making a pest of myself! They have no useful or working phone number though! Each time I call, every option just puts me through to a recorded voice telling me to use their web chat! Angry

Have you tried say no to 0870 or similar which may give you a head office number?
Either that or try the company you placed the order with
