Towels on sunloungers- scourge of the holiday

I'm on holiday in france and theres a lovely pool with lots of sunloungers but always very busy.
Theres this one british family that go up there in the morning, take posession of 3 loungers and leave their towels there all day. We went up the other day & had to sit on the floor as there were none available but said family had gone off for lunch & came back 1 hour later leaving towels on loungers. I have been watching them and they do it every day. The day we had to sit on the floor, I moved one of their towels & took posession of one of their 3 loungers and when they came back the man complained as now they only had 2!
Aibu to think that this is just not reasonable behaviour?
(I am being slightly tongue in cheek with my post but I do think they are selfish twats!)

I hate this-I also hate hotels where it's banned but not enforced. I'd just take there towels to lost property and use the sun beds.

I'd take the towels to lost property every time. Soon get the hint.

Sorry but only a fool sits on the ground while a lounger is empty for most of the day. It's not allowed in most places so ask staff to remove the offending towels but if not just put the towels to one side and move the sun beds, then they can't tell who has taken them.

YANBU it's really selfish.

Yeah just take the sunbeds.

Just move the stuff or get a member of staff to do it. To be honest I've only ever seen this at 4 star and lower hotels. At 5 star and 5+star hotels there is a sense of courtesy between holidaymakers. Not trying to be an arse here, just something I've witnessed in the huge amount of travelling I've done all over the world. The more you pay the better it is.

Lower than four star? Is there such a thing?

Yes, this is what I was going to say. Move them after you've removed the towels (to lost property, ideally) and then they won't know who to have a go at.

It is annoying that there are never enough loungers though. They should have enough for at least one per room (if not per guest) surely? TBH this is one of the reasons I prefer to go self catered in a villa with a small private pool or apartment with only a handful of people sharing.

Tbh an hour while you grab lunch I think is fine, but not all morning or all evening. Most places have a policy about this, could you ask a member of staff or at reception?

This was a problem when we stayed in Mexico last year, and the staff used to do a sweep about 10.30am and removed all of the hotel towels on loungers. They wouldn't touch personal possessions or towels which didn't belong to the hotel though. It helped, but people were still frustrated.

It's selfish behaviour. Unfortunately some people are just totally selfish and don't care.

This happened to us, we actually watched one family leave their towels on 4 loungers then went to the bus stop to go to the market for the day. My daughter and I simply removed them and draped them over a nearby wall.Ignorant people mustn't be allowed to get away with such atrocious behaviour.

If you're not on the lounger or in the pool, you lose dibs. That's how it works. (Or should.)

just remove the towels and use the loungers yourself.

The scourge of a holiday is people playing beach tennis. Especially aggressive cunts who think it's Murray v Djokovic.

I would just fold them up neatly and put them onto one bed or put them on a nearby fence/wall/table and then use the beds.

I was in a 5 star hotel and had gone down for an early morning dip.

After I got out, me and BF were reading the papers and this guy came along and "reserved" 4 of the best loungers (best for the morning sun I mean). He sat there for a bit, chatted to the pool guy and then buggered off.

Another lady came along and we got chatting to her about it. She had her swim and meantime the guy - still alone - came back. The lady then started asking in a loud voice who all these towels belonged to as there was nobody else around, and really, this was behaviour more suited to the Costas, not a 5 star hotel (in a very deliberate sniffy tone). Guy looked sheepish and immediately found his newspaper article the most interesting thing in the world.

Of course, the next morning, me, BF and lady all had exactly the same idea and were on those exact loungers very promptly, just for laughs. I may have even spread out a couple of towels on other nearby loungers...

(I would have reported it but he was very "matey" with the pool guy and I didn't want to get a (likely low wage) employee in trouble who was probably between a rock and hard place with this entitled twat.)

YABU if they just left for one hour for lunch, but were using them for the rest of the day.

Also annoys me...last year our hotel had a strict policy against this. Except it wasn't reinforced and there were no where near enough loungers (and it was 4 star...)
DP (not British and an early riser) took to getting up early and reserving 4 loungers with our towels -with a if you can't beat them join them mentality. Honestly I would never have been able to -I was slightly embarrassed but also vaguely grateful - as for most of the day every lounger was taken with a body on them and also people sitting on walls etc...(we used to give up a lounger or 2 in the day as DD2 didn't really need one as spent most of the time in the pool - eg to a family who like us on our first day followed the rules and so had nowhere to sit)
This year there was no policy and lots of loungers - people didn't reserve them - except DP went out on the first morning and did. And he insisted on carrying on - which actually annoyed me as it wasn't necessary.
One day he had put the towels near one pool (there were 3) but then took two towels to another pool where DD2 wanted to swim that day and had left the other 2 towels on the other loungers for hours ... when I found out (realised we had 4 loungers but 2 towels) and went to collect them I found someone using the loungers .....and our towels... I had to ask for them back which I guess is something you could do to discourage the hoggers!!!!
And as the week went on more people start reserving them and the hotel put signs up asking people not to do it - I do wonder if DP started the annoying trend...

Bit of both - yabu if they were using the loungers throughout the day with only a break for lunch or drinks or whatever. Yanbu if they left their towels there for huge chunks of the day while they did other things.

snort at the idea that this only happens in cheapo hotels!!!!

I dunno -0there's never enough beds and the hotels never deal with it properly.

Only once did I see a hotel try to sort it out (in a 5 star hotel may I add Grin) - they just removed everything from all unoccupied beds at 10am. was farcical - people were having to jump out of the pool to reclaim their belongings! and then other people came along and reserved the newly vacated beds and went off to the beach - cue bed rage by the pool the whole day.......

I hate this about staying in hotels where there are loungers. I've seen it happen in all grades of hotel, including 5* ones and the British are generally the worst for it. Hotels should ban it and enforce the ban by removing the towels.

In a Dubai hotel I stayed at, the staff would give you a towel then find you a lounger. Any towels left unattended for more than two hours were removed.
