Motorway speed and dp

I don't drive so I'm not 100% sure what's normal (come from a non driving household) but feel like my dp doesn't listen to my concerns about his speed on motorway (mid to late 80s) is this fairly normal or too fast? I obviously know it's above the speed limit but do most people go over?

A lot of people do go over but that seems quite a bit over. Maybe it's the angle your looking at his gauge. I guess it also depends on which motorway, some are big and empty others more congested and accident prone. Either way if it makes you u comfortable and you've told him to slow down and he refuses then regardless of the law he's a prick.

It's over and therefore against the law but fairly normal judging by how much faster other drivers are going to my 70mph. I did used to drive faster in my reckless youth though.

People do go over but I wish they wouldn't. There would be far less serious accidents if people stopped driving so fast all the time.

He is breaking the law.

Motorways are generally the safest places to be driving. I would rather everyone drove at 80 on the motorway but 20 on all residential roads than 70 and 30 respectively.

I know it's not an either or and I do generally respect the limits. But as speeding goes I feel far more strongly about streets than I do motorways.

80 is more typical. Not so much mid to high 80s. He's probably pushing his luck.

Sorry, I misread. Agree with LittleBear that late 80s is pushing it.

As long as he is a confident driver who knows what he's doing it's probably fine but MN fixates on the speed limit over and above anything else. Being able to read the ever-changing conditions and react accordingly is pretty important too.

80 is fairly common, 80-90 is not unusual to be honest judging by how fast others overtake me doing 75ish - does't make it advisable though!
Unless there's a reason you can't, learn to drive yourself - then you can choose the speed you travel.

If he's caught then I reckon he'll get the points and fine rather than the course, which will teach him a lesson.

The main question is do you feel safe? Is he in control? If yes, and you're just not fond of his speed, then leave him to it and eventually he'll get caught.

In the nicest possible way, I could suggest that if you don't like his driving, you could learn to drive yourself.

But I'm saying this with a DH who doesn't drive. 23 years of marriage and a teenager - I do a LOT of chauffeuring of other people.

That is fast, though. I'd say around 80 MPH isn't too bad, depending on the conditions (whether it's wet, driving into the sun, congested road, etc). But it also depends on the car. A very old tin can would be quite hard to control at those speeds. A modern car, especially a luxury brand one would cope quite well.

I lock the cc at 80 on the motorway, which according to the gps is an actual speed of about 73/74 mph. Speedos are deliberately set to read up to 10% more than actual speed so at 85 he is actually doing mid to high 70s. If he is otherwise driving competently it wouldn't bother me.

Ok thanks, glad to hear he's not a total speed freak! I live in London so don't have a huge need to drive but am taking lessons. I have never been on the motorway though so it's difficult for me to gage. It's a modern car and he's very competent and is generally a responsible guy so will trust he knows what he's doing. We are on the motorway now and do seem to be doing a lot of overtaking though! I don't think I was actually aware at all until I started having lessons and it seems to have tapped me into backstreet driver mode Confused
