To think you shouldn't have to dust every day

I know this is a boring housework type post but geez, I'm so bloody sick of having to dust every single day.

I will dust a surface, (not high traffic- obviously I'd do them every day anyway) , and there will be a dusty deposit there again the next day if not within a few hours.

I'm not a super obsessive cleaning type person. These definitely do need a dust.

Is it normal to have to do this? Do I have an extraordinarily dusty house?
Why are some houses so much dustier than others?

(p.s I have to vacuum every day too)

AIBU to think people don't usually have to do this everyday?

Do you damp dust/mop? I think hoovering and dry dusting just stir it up a bit ready to resettle the next day. I don't do it anywhere near every day, it doesn't look much worse from one day to the next once you have accepted fairly low standards.

People will blame wooden floors, but I think carpets just hold onto dust which is not much better in my opinion.

Blimey. I dust about once a month! Genuinely don't have to more than that! We do have hard floors that I clean about twice a week and no pets though.

Yes I do damp dust. In fact I find it a pain as the cloth gets quite dusty and almost re-dirties the surface. I do have wooden floors downstairs.

My house is exactly the same op...I notice the dust comes back within 2 days...It really irritates me...I clean all the bloody time but nothing ever stays that way!

I dust 2-3 times a year or when i see build up. I only have one dark wood Expedit and a couple of radiator covers to wipe down. Oh, and tv table. I use a damp microfibre cloth or two then wash them.

Our 100m2 house is tiled throught, it is swept and mopped once a week. That is a giant ballache!

Windows are always open and we take rubbish out very quickly, so the house isn't musty.

Dusting meh!

Do you have dark furniture? I notice dust on the TV and other dark stuff within a day or two but it's less noticeable on the wooden stuff.

I hear you! I dust every 5 days or so, probably about once a week actually.
The dust always comes back within 24 hours

What do people use for wet dusting? I use a microfibre but I can never get it all up it just collects in bits

motherofglob we have oak furniture but the telly is black and it is a problem. It also shows on white sills etc.

Maybe you just don't run around the house creating winds of passage enough with my 2 running around (and windows open all year pretty much) I dobt think dust gets a chance to settle!

I think you are probably over-noticing the dust.
You don't 'have to' vacuum every day, you are choosing to. If it doesn't feel like a choice then it's a compulsion. It makes your mind 'happier' if you do it but it's not necessary.
As Joan Rivers once said, "I don't get this housework thing at all. You spend hours cleaning the place, then six months later you have to do it all over again".

Just stop dusting every day. Recalibrate your dust radar and halve the amount of time you spend dusting by dusting every other month day.

Here are some solutions:
Spend less time in your house. Then you will notice the dust less.
Cover every surface with something. Ideally, add to it every day. The dust won't have time to settle on the thing on the top.
Dust only when someone else complains about it. And rope them in!
In winter, keep your lighting low - you can go for months without seeing any dust.
