AIBU?

To be angry that people are downplaying my achievement?

I feel very upset.

I found out this week that I'm graduating with a First, only just scraped one but its 70+ nethertheless.

I got really excited and posted it on my Facebook wall, and I've had really horrible comments such as "no one likes a show off", "getting a first won't make you better at your job", "I have got a 2:1, at least I had fun during my degree instead of spending my time with my nose in textbooks", "your employer won't care".

AIBU for just wanting a bit of recognition that I've done bloody well?!?!? My partner doesn't even know what it means, how do I explain it to him?

Feeling very woe is me. Sorry Confused

Well, I shall say congratulations. Bloody well done

redskytonight · 27/07/2016 18:25

Congratulations!! I am guessing your friends are a teeny bit jealous ...

JinkxMonsoon · 27/07/2016 18:25

That's so nasty. None of those people are your friends.

Libitina · 27/07/2016 18:26

Congratulations OP. Star

PatMullins · 27/07/2016 18:26

YANBU! Well done OP!

Those people can get fucked Smile

Millipedewithherfeetup · 27/07/2016 18:26

Star its a big achievement! Well done and ignore the negative comments Flowers

horseygeorgie1 · 27/07/2016 18:26

Well done, that's fantastic! Sounds like a bad case of sour grapes to me. Ignore it, that is a very good achievement.

Nellyphants · 27/07/2016 18:27

Sour grapes, ignore. Well dine

BertPuttocks · 27/07/2016 18:27

It's a fantastic achievement.

Well done. Star

spongebob5 · 27/07/2016 18:27

Congratulations on your degree! Flowers

antiqueroadhoe · 27/07/2016 18:27

Well done!!

Just explain the boundaries to your partner. He will understand. Not many people get a first. You should be proud. Your friends don't sound very nice

Cinnamon2013 · 27/07/2016 18:27

Congratulations. A huge achievement.

The comments seem unkind. But - personally I would not have posted this on Facebook. The tone is all wrong. Be quietly proud and share your happiness in person. It's just more.... I don't know. dignified. And considerate of those who might not have done as well.

CannotEvenDeal · 27/07/2016 18:28

What kind of so-called "friends" do you have on FB???

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/07/2016 18:28

My god, are people really this jealous and horrible?! I certainly wouldn't call them friends. I can kind of understand a tongue in cheek "no-one likes a show off" as long as it's followed by a "only joking obvs, well done, you deserve it!"

CMOTDibbler · 27/07/2016 18:29

Congratulations! Getting a first is amazing! They are being twunts

Okay377 · 27/07/2016 18:29

Oh bloody hell. Your FB 'friends' need to learn if you don't have anything nice to say, you should restrict your remarks to the weather.

Well done! A first is fantastic Star be proud and happy - as my dad said when I got my degree (a 2:1 Grin) no one can ever take that away from you.

I would probably block those FB posters

PatMullins · 27/07/2016 18:29

Oh pish. Be proud OP, shout it from the rooftops if you like. You must have worked bloody hard and you deserve a well done, not shitty comments like that.

NanFlanders · 27/07/2016 18:29

Nice one! Well done!!!

Therealloislane · 27/07/2016 18:29

Nasty friends.

Add us on fb & we'll all post huge congratulations Flowers

MsMermaid · 27/07/2016 18:30

Congratulations! A first is fantastic!

Evergreen17 · 27/07/2016 18:30

Are you female??
Females are often punished and laughed at when sharing an achievement.

Screw them

Very well done, you should be proud of yourself and in a few years you will look back and be super happy you worked hard for those results

Okay377 · 27/07/2016 18:30

And explain to your partner that it shows you have excelled and recognises your talent and hard work are exceptional in your subject.

I got a 2:1 and was pleased with that.
I would be well impressed at someone getting a First.
Well done!

(your FB mates are knobs)

situatedknowledge · 27/07/2016 18:31

Bloody hell that is atrocious! I've just graduated with a 2.2. I was absolutely gutted because I only just missed a 2.1 (1%) and had a distinction for my research project. I've been an OU student, and the mutual support on the OU FB pages has been phenomenal. Each success celebrated, and each failure commiserated, and support offered for re-sits.

That said, I haven't said anything to anyone except my immediate family, and best friend, because I just know that my extended family and friends wouldn't understand, and though they might not verbalise the sorts of comments you've had, I know many of them would think it (even of a 2.2). I also know that some course mates have had similar to you from friends and especially family. One even had her parents ask why on earth they would bother coming to her graduation when she invited them. She is devastated.

What you have achieved is amazing. Star You know it, and anyone who truly matters will know it to. My daughter has a poster on her wall, I think it is a Dr Seuss saying. "Say what you feel, and be what you are. Those that matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter". These nasty idiots have given you the opportunity to see that they don't matter.

Flowers and wholehearted congratulations from me.

plimsolls · 27/07/2016 18:31
