AIBU?

Adjectives

Surely at the very core of an internet forum is that people would post messages. Why bother posting on a forum if a thread is going to be deleted because of an adjective?

An adjective describes a noun. Miserable is an adjective. Old is an adjective. The use of such words to describe a less than joyous woman of 88 years of age is not ageist, it's descriptive. Ageism is about discrimination or an undeserved negative impression. Describing somebody based on their actions is not ageist. It's using the English language.

And yet the thread repeatedly referring to people with ginger hair lives on?

You've got to wonder.....

Don't be silly. The thread in question was quite clearly abusing someone because of her age. You wouldn't have described someone young as a "miserable young bag". And this is a TAAT.

Er well the adjective old was modifying the rather offensive word 'bag'. Describing a person that's a member of a certain group (eg older ladies) with an offensive term for members of that group (eg bag) doesn't only insult that particular person....

What the two posters above me said. It should be quite obvious why that thread was deleted.

No it's not a TAAT. This is a thread about deleting threads because of the use of certain words.

Describing somebody as a 'bag' has nothing to do with their age. It's used to describe teenagers upwards. It's not ageist to refer to somebody as 'a bag'. It's not complimentary for sure, but it's not ageist either.

Perhaps you'd like to take the matter up with MNHQ then. And this is clearly a TAAT.

There's never any point in arguing with the ref. Suck it up.

Are you being deliberately thick? No-one has suggested that the use of "bag" was ageist.

Think about it in terms of racism. It's OK to call someone a thieving bastard. It is not OK to call them a thieving (insert race/colour) bastard, even though the use of the race or colour might be factually accurate.

Yeah but sometimes it's preferable to argue with the ref than just quit the sport....
