AIBU?

To be fucked off with time-wasters?

I've been a MN for a little while, and it helped enormously during my break up with my ex - tons of positive stories from women who had been through it and not only survived, but thrived. But I have wasted far too many evenings offering advice/kind words etc to threads which have been pulled for being, basically, bollocks. I've done it again tonight. Why the fuck do people think pulling this shit is ok?

I have no idea but YADNBU. I've just fell for one as well on such a honkers topic as well. Just WHY? Why dope pole bother??

It isn't good and it makes me skeptical about getting invested and offering more than a few sympathetic words.

YADDNBU

Trouble is these threads make me look at others which may well be truthful and wonder if they are a pack of lies too.

My trolldar is excellent now. I've sniffed out several which I would have quite happily posted on previously. Although I've also wrongly called troll on an occasion (and apologised). It's shit. I blame penis beaker.

I've seen threads that I thought were a bit suspect, ended up apologising to the OP - and then finding out it was bullshit anyway. We all love a bit of attention, of course, but I feel incredibly pissed off at bothering to make a considered reply to someone who couldn't give a toss. Grrr... I guess it's the MN baptism.

You'll become good at spotting the ridiculously obvious ones.

But army the problem is that they're not all obvious now. Sad

flickers exactly that, I felt I had been too hasty in calling a poster a troll, apologised....and she bloody well was. (Tempted to ask what a penis beaker is but not sure knowledge would enrich my existence)

I'm learning.... But at the same time, I don't want to be cynical of every slightly 'odd' post.

It's horrid isn't it? The only time I ever got thoroughly fooled was by a troll who copied a very well known and prolific poster's name, replacing a letter 'l' with a numeral '1', which of course look pretty well the same. Genuine regular MN poster's son had been seriously unwell. Bastard troll announced he'd died. Cue about 500 of us doing deepest sympathies. It was absolute awful. Genuine poster was (naturally) very upset - but also very understanding, and is still posting. HQ did get rid of bastard troll reasonably fast - within a couple of hours - not bad going considering it was overnight at a weekend. But I still cannot fathom what sort of sick twisted shithead thought there was anything funny clever or entertaining about it in the first place.

I do try to remember that you should never ever invest any more of yourself than you can afford to lose!

I am rubbish at it. I think one last week was on "water sports". Can't understand why people would bother?????!

You know what? I sometimes see threads that I think are ridiculously troll-like but I read the answers anyway because I have nothing better to do and I always gain something from them, some insight into how people are, or the troubles others may face, or how to be a nicer person myself by copying things that other people have said or done, so I can understand you feel your time has been wasted by answering but I can tell you lots of other bored people mumsnetters have also read your answers and have become richer for having done so.

Oh. Cross posted. Apart from shitty threads.

I feel like I've recognised a few, but I don't want to become a 'troll hunter'. It just fucks me off that I sit here and think 'how best to respond to this?' while the OP either couldn't give a shite or is showing his/her friends. I do understand there are some isolated individuals out there, and that sometimes, any attention is better than none, but please, just been honest. I've been overwhelmed by some really thoughtful and considered replies to a number of threads on MN - don't abuse this, please!

I don't get why people get in such a state about being. "taken in" by trolls. It's an anonymous discussion board, nobody owes you full disclosure, stop over investing in strangers' lives and you'll be a lot happier.

It's very odd, I've only just realised it happens when I've read some and people have commented about them being fake and then I later seeing them being pulled....I don't get why when they're not even funny but appear to be a real problem?

Report
LoreleiGilmoreIsMyBFF · 26/07/2016 21:47

fast the twins one was extremely naive, new to abbreviations but in my world, DT's meant only one thing and it wasn't twins.

I don't mind so much, I think a lot of them certainly create discussion of situations that could happen anyway. Although the one AlpacaLypse is obviously particularly disgusting.
