AIBU?

AIBU to be irritated when people don't RTFT, or just the OP's posts or at least the last few replies

before wading in?

Am I?

Or is it perfectly reasonable to want to bang my head against the desk?

I know people haven't got the time or inclination to read 8 pages of stuff, but your answer that you have spent time and care crafting and typing (yeah, right) is a pretty pointless waste of time if the OP has admitted they're wrong, or they've added loads of new info or the thread has moved completely sideways.

I know forums have always been like this, but the MN facility to highlight your own and the OP's posts does help. And I do feel sorry for some when they're getting a total kicking when they have actually had the grace to take opinions on board and admit they're wrong.

Just spare a couple of moments to catch up in future, would you please? Ta.

I completely agree. It makes me so mad that I have actual nail marks in the arms of my chair where I have to hold on tight not to make the kind of comment that gets you an unwelcome mail from HQ and the warning of a tanned backside Grin

I agree! Especially when OP has updated and they only answer the opening post, even after 200+ replies Angry

Have you cancelled the cheque?

Some people don't even bother reading the op properly. One the other day said how old their dc was. First reply, how old are they?

I knew (being on glue) that I'd get a couple of those replies.

But I'm glad I'm not alone.

I really wish that MNHQ would making highlighting the OP's posts the default setting, and people can then switch it off if they like. I was on MN for years before realising you could do this.

When there is a logical answer and people just repeat it over and over again.

THERE'S. NO. NEED.

YABU To me, the OP is a question or request for advice. All posters answer or give their personal opinion, that doesn't change mine. I like to give my reaction that is not influenced by others.

I didn't know you could.

If you CBA to read the whole thread don't comment. You are probably repeating whatever has been said previously on a long thread.

Report
NoahVale · 16/07/2016 09:20

yeah but

Report
NoahVale · 16/07/2016 09:21

sometimes the thread is just so very long.

Report
thebestfurchinchilla · 16/07/2016 09:21

I can see the point of seeing OP's updates but not the whole thread necessarily as I am giving my opinion. How do you highlight OP updates, I can't find a settings option.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2016 09:22

If it's too long to read just hide it.

This drives me potty. Personally, if a see that a thread has so many pages of responses I find it hard to see that I will have anything unique to add so generally I pass it by.

Going straight past 8 pages of discussion and conversation when the topic could now be 100% different to the op is just a bit strange. Like leaving a conversation 1 minute in, returning 5 hours later and expecting the topic to be the same

Report
NoahVale · 16/07/2016 09:22

you know why dont people just do what they like,
give an opinion.
that is all it is about.

It's not always a conversation though. Mostly it's asking for advice or an opinion. Don't need to read everyone elses, that's the OPs job.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2016 09:25

I wouldn't give an opinion without reading the whole thread. But that's just me.

Report
thebestfurchinchilla · 16/07/2016 09:25

Can someone tell me how to highlight the OPs updates?

Your opinion is yours, why do you need to read the whole thread before commenting?

Report
Passmethecrisps · 16/07/2016 09:28

I suppose where it grates me is when op has asked something unreasonable for example then things get worked through and it becomes supportive. Then you get a supportive thread peppered with "oh my god! Why do you even need to ask you complete idiot" type stuff.

If it is a case of "what do I use to get a plate out from behind the toilet" and 163737 different offerings then fair enough

Depends what the OP is asking. If it's one of those weird list threads like what you had for tea then fair enough.

If it's a bonkers AIBU then maybe that's OK too.

Click on this link when on desktop.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk?call=Preferences.

Then there's an option for it. It's very helpful - can stop posters looking like twits!
