AIBU?

AIBU to suddenly panic about pre-natal testing?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant. Have had 7 scans because DD2 was born small with rare bowel defect (rarely genetic just a random thing). Agreed to full screening offered here. Baby looks fine thank goodness and my downs risk was 1:10,000 (had NT combined test).

Last night a charity picture and a link came up on my FB wall of a baby who died of Trisomy 13. Really, really upset me. Read through my notes and don't appear to have been screened for Trisomy 13/18. Just 21 (downs).

I'm worried sick, despite so many scans.

Am I being unreasonable? :(

It is very likely that if your baby had a trisomy then some soft markers would have been picked up on a scan. Flowers

Also trisomy 13 and 18 are very severe, much more so than 21. The chance of getting to 36 weeks without it being detected is virtually nil.

I hope so Oysterbabe. It was such a shock when DD was born with something wrong although thank goodness she was otherwise healthy and it's been fixed. She still needs care for it but it's manageable.

They would absolutely have picked that up on one of your scans, especially if they were taking a closer look at you due to history.

I just rang the number on my downs screening letter and was told that I had been screened but their policy was not to report. She read results over the phone and I'm low risk.

Feel much better now.

Really need to stop worrying. I so hope that this baby is healthy. My DD is wonderful and I love her completely but I really dont want to have to go through that again or worse.

It's completely understandable to feel that way. My 6 month old DD was born with a heart defect and may need surgery one day. I'm never not worrying about her. I'll be in bits when we have another I'm sure.

Your baby will be here soon and I'm sure it'll be perfect.

Thank you oysterbabe. My friends little boy was born with a heart defect and at 13 has finally had it fixed. As scary as it is a mum caring for your child through that, be reassured that babies/children are very tough and the NHS can do the most amazing things. I hope all is OK with your DD and if you do have another baby one day, just ask for the extra scans on theNHS GAP programme . They have reassured me as much as they could have done. It's well to remember that most of these problems just randomly happen. Xxxx

YANBU to have pre birth wobbles but I hope you've been reassured. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy and birth. My time with my healthy newborn DS2 was even more precious because DS1 had been whisked away at birth with a heart defect (he's fine now thanks to the NHS).
