Y6 done no work since SATS

What are your y6's doing now?
At dc school they've done no maths or English or any lessons really since the SATS. They needed a break yes, but AIBU in thinking it'd be good to keep up what they've learnt? What about the summer slide?? This is summer slide plus two months!
They are practising for an end of term play relentlessly. Learning songs to perform & watching DVDs. The teachers don't seem any less stressed though, shouting at them and threatening to call off the play if they don't show more enthusiasm they're bored rigid!

Why don't you go in and ask the teacher, that's the only way you will know for sure that they are doing no work. IME, English and Maths are done but under nowhere near as much pressure therefore the children deem it as "not work". When else are they meant to rehearse their play? Normally you aren't allowed to do anything like that before SATs so it is crammed in after. If the school play/concert was cancelled I'm sure the parents would complain.
Like I say, ask the teacher to clarify if you are concerned.

Meh. Are yours going up to secondary in Sept? I doubt two quiet weeks are really here or there.

They are 11 aren't they? Let them have a break and enjoy themselves while they still can and have some memories with their friends before they all move on to new schools that aren't based on SATs tests.

And no, I would not complain if the play was cancelled, the teacher is threatening to cancel it because the kids are not showing enough enthusiasm. Just cancel it, save all the stress

In my experience, the first part of the year in year 6 has more than its fair share of maths and English. The end of the year is the opportunity to catch up on subjects that have been sidelined such as art and pe. A huge number of schools are preparing for end of year plays at the moment. There's no reason they should be watching DVDs though unless it links to their learning in some way.

I started a very similar thread in education. I agree with you. In terms of their actual education they would be far better off having a decent balanced curriculum throughout the year, rather than months and months of deadly SATs preparation, with no light relief, followed by weeks of intensive "fun". I feel that primary schools completely lose sight of the fact these children are continuing their education after the summer and could do with maintaining a bit of routine. I feel for the year 7 maths teachers that probably have to go over an awful lot of forgotten stuff.

My DD and her friends have done lots of trips and their fun things since Sats and very little if any work - fine by me

Ours have transition for the last 2 weeks of term so they are already at high school.

My child is also bored rigid rehearsing for a play. She says they have done no English or Maths for ages. I would be much more in favour of balance throughout the year rather than this state of affairs.

I wouldn't even really say it's good drama as the usual people have all the big parts (yes, I am aware I sound like one of those parebts) and the rest of them are stood round like lemons for hours on end being quiet. No talking or reading allowed.

I agree about having fun but this is not fun, I could hear the teacher shouting at them from the playground, noones enjoying it not them or the kids it seems.

Perhaps I have it wrong about summer slide then, I thought it was a concern to not at least keep practising.

As a secondary teacher I agree it's a problem; they appear to have forgotten everything by the start of Yr7. Also as a drama teacher It doesn't sound like the kids are getting a very positive experience of drama either!

Give them a break. They're probably all exhausted, counting down the days, maybe a bit nervous at the changes in the next few months, and ready for secondary. They'd be unsettled regardless of whether they were doing English and Maths or singing.

They'll be straight into work at a pace they won't believe when they start secondary.

They're doing nothing at our school too. With the kids off to any one of up to 4 secondary schools in the area it's major disruption at the moment as they all trundle off for induction days too

My 11 very studious daughter is absolutly bored as shit of school this whole year. They're sacrificed a whole year of learning for a whole raft of utterly meaningless tests and teacherswho are so bored of the whole thing they can't be arsed to teach.

I genuinely think my daughter is doing well despite her school, not because of it.

My dd is only in year 5, but they also seem to have done no work since the half term break... It seems strange given that there is supposed to be all this emphasis about raising standards!

yep, week's residential followed byweek preparing for school production followed by preparing for 'take over' day - they get to be the teachers - followed by three day's transition to secondary...

may explain why i was pissed off when school n tified safeguarding when I took Y6 out for one fucking un-authorised day.....let them know at 8.15 am btw
