Title says it all really. I have a really unhealthy relationship with food and cannot stop binging. I've gained a stone in a matter of weeks. Someone please help me!

I'm a big binger, literally!
What's really helped me recently is doing the 5:2 diet. I've found it surprisingly easy so far (3 weeks in) and have lost half a stone.
What's surprised me the most is that on my non fast days I don't stuff myself with food. I don't know why this is but for me this is amazing progress because pretty much every I time are it would be until I felt sick.
It feels really liberating to be in control of what I eat. Oh and I'm not overly careful about what I eat on my non fast days and will eat some chocolate or whatever but a sensible amount and certainly not unit I feel sick. I only hope I can keep it up!!
I hope that helps in some way. I totally understand where you're coming from.

I'm the same. I binge eat. I know it's because I'm depressed and I'm scared of going the other way. I have a very unhealthy relationship with food. When im depressed i either binge and eat until I feel sick or I don't eat at all. When I wasn't eating I was very underweight. I was unwell. I knew I couldn't go back to that so I ended up over eating instead and now I'm obese.

I hate it. I don't know how to stop without stopping eating pretty much all together though.

I think there's a long running thread on binge eating. I'll see if I can find it & link for you.

Brain over Binge is a great book. I'd be very wary of restricting calories, it tends to get you into a binge-restrict cycle that's hugely tricky to get out of. Are you eating enough during the day? So important when trying to break binge eating.

It's a really horrible place to be. But you can break free of it - try the book i mention above - Amazon have it!

I think it would be helpful to learn about your physiology and understand why you are binging. It's not just to do with childhood issues, comfort eating or lack of mental willpower etc which is often cited as the root cause. That is of course part of the puzzle but there's also a heck of a lot more to it than that.

For example. Pregnant women often crave food incessantly and eat a lot. Why is that? A person who is extremely estrogen dominant or putting any kind of natural or synthetic hormone into their body (contraceptive pill anyone) often has increased appetite and an insatiable urge to eat, thus gains weight (just like pms - when progesterone levels begin to drop allowing estrogen to rise) Oftentimes symptoms such as anger, irritability, low mood/depression or anxiety are present also. These things of course only perpetuate the binge eating cycle and causes people to believe it's all related to their mood. Whilst that is true to some degree, everything in the body works synergistically after all, it often means that people will focus their efforts on their mental health (that's great) in the hopes of achieving weight loss whilst continuing to neglect their bodies. So you can think positive or maybe take anti depressants, but if you are hypothyroid or extremely estrogen dominant well eventually you (likely) will succumb to appetite urges and be back to square one again. The sex hormones are just one part of the puzzle of course, there are other important aspects at play too. The night is getting late though!

I would say educate yourself as much as possible on the body and the brain. Eating is not a bad thing. Food is good. We've been taught that it is sinful. Starving the body only damages the thyroid which in turn affects weight anyway. Chasing one fad diet after the next will achieve temporary happiness only. Get healthy in your mind and body. Learn what's going on in there. Stop punishing yourself for following the most basic principle of survival - eating. We need food.

If my hormones are off one month then I can easily go off track and gain a few. I don't punish myself, I just see the positive. I'm nourishing my body with nutrients (including salt and sugar - yes!) and feeding my thyroid. It sure hates to be starved. Also whenever you go hungry you release stress hormones - who wants that? Then you'll just go even wackier with the food later not to mention all the other problems stress hormones cause (aging for one - starving is a great way to get wrinkles once youth isn't on your side.) It sometimes takes time to get back on track but I can tell you that back in the days where I would mentally punish myself for eating so much then it would take a thousand times longer.

I do understand op. I had an eating disorder for many years. Whilst I was never overweight the mental aspect of it was torture. I did it all. And I have/had so many health problems which I had to learn to fix myself.

Please don't beat yourself up.

Every day is a new beginning. Start tomorrow. Don't try to restrict drastically. Just choose good foods. Then again the day after. And the day after. You'll feel better by that alone. Stay busy and do things that make you feel happy, that make you laugh. Talk to friends for support or come here. I hope this made sense I'm pretty tired right now.

Feel better op.

I'm a binger too. (binge-er?) On the outside I look like I have my life pretty sorted - great job, home, hobbies etc and I am genuinely happy but I am completely out of control when it comes to food. I know all the theory but I can literally be telling myself all about the harm I am doing while stuffing down four mars bars. I just don't understand why I do it.

I binge eat, I'm now following slimming world which I found helpful as it doesn't restrict the amount you can eat but suggests alternatives. I try and fill up with loads of fruit/veg/salad and protein at meals, and always have something picky on hand. When I feel like I want to sit and eat I make myself get a glass of water then get up and do something so I'm away from the temptation. It gets easier as I get into the habit.

OP, I think you need to work out WHY you do it, because I believe that over eating, under eating and everything in between often has an emotional cause and until that is discovered then it will be very difficult to change one's habits.

Do you know why you do what you do?

I just feel generally bad at the moment. I really don't know why at all. When I binge, I compensate the next day. I also feel like when I am really strict and eat healthy, I feel deprived so i binge. I do want to be healthy but binging always ruins it 😢

More often than people realise, an imbalance in bacteria / yeast in the gut can produce cravings for sugar and carbs. It's also common in children. Try restting through a bit of time away from dairy and some probiotics.
Ask in your local health / whole food shop and / or google it.

This will have the double bonus of making you have a stricter diet for a month and kick binges, and (hopefully) sort your gut out. IDK if this is what's happening with you, I just have read that it is more common than we think and then painted as a lack of self - control rather than as an actual physiological problem which can be addressed.

Other suggestion is to only have food in the house that you are ok to eat nad can either eat loads of or don't want to binge on. Get a load of celery / cucumber instead of biscuits, for example. Ditch the bread. I know this sounds trite, but if it's not there it makes bingeing on junk food harder.

Good luck!

In what way do you feel bad op? Emotionally, physically or both? How is your general health?

You desperately need to change your attitude to food. You're constantly punishing yourself mentally. You'll end up stuck in a cycle of bingeing and depression and more bingeing. You need to break the cycle. You can't have a healthy body without a healthy mind. Start with this: if you've had a day of a lot food, be it good or 'bad' food (in your eyes) say something positive about it.

Can you do that?

Same here op, I can easily put away a family pack of chocolate bars whilst reading about the latest diets. I don't know why I do it, probably boredom/ feeling down etc. I use it as a treat to myself.

In the past I've found food prepping/planning really helped me a lot, I'd do 2 days meals at a time so I'd know what I was having when rather than searching for anything I could get my hands on in the house. Think I'll have to go back to this again actually!

I feel bad physically and mentally. I have a history of anorexia so binge eating makes me feel very bad. My health isn't that bad, but I'm worried it will be.

I've just binged again. 2 cereal bars, more cereal, 3 biscuits, some ice cream 😢

Yes, I think you do need professional help but you know that and that's a positive. You'll get support on here but maybe a visit to your GP as the first port of call might not be a bad idea.
