A large van drove at some speed over the zebra crossing I was walking over. I screamed and he swerved and braked.

I came within a whisker of being run over.

I took his registration number.

Is there any point in me reporting him?

It would have been better if you'd noticed the company name (if there was one) - eg reporting a Sky or Dynorod driver directly to their company.

But it could be the case that the crossing is being reviewed and evidence is required before it can be upgraded. Every "near miss" reported builds an evidence file for the council to justify spending money.

Oh God this happened to me today as well, except at a pelican crossing and an older driver pootling through the red light - she missed me by a whisker, as I jumped back into the pavement. Luckily I realised she wasn't going to stop in time!! I was too shocked to get the reg, but would have reported if I had.

I had a lorry driver do the same to me, and the bugger was on the phone as well; which would explain why he didn't notice the flashing orange lights, the stripes on the road or indeed the speed limit. The manager was suitably not-impressed, as he should be.

He was going too fast and hadn't slowed down or checked if there was anyone on the crossing.

I was in clear view.

Good luck, I reported (with dashcam footage) the driver of a van who tried to ram me without any warning or prior build up. The company (large parcel delvery co) couldn't give a flyjng fig.

I saw this happen to a woman a small child this afternoon, white BMW and she was right in the middle of the crossing. I was too far to see any reg to report but I know there was a pedestrian hit there a while ago. I find zebra crossings in London are treated as optional by drivers, I've never had a near miss anywhere else in the UK.

Not much point (as annoying as that is) a taxi did this to me a few weeks ago on a zebra in a supermarket car park. I was already half way across and he couldn't be arsed to stop, so swerved around me - then wound down his window to call me a stupid white bitch. Reported to the licensing team at the town hall but didn't even bother with the police. Like Worra said, it's your word against theirs and it just wasn't worth the hassle to me.

An interesting piece of advice on this subject from my retired chief inspector traffic cop parent (they know I'm not the slowest driver about): If they come knocking due to some alleged complaint by a random member of the public then only confirm that you are the registered keeper and confirm who was in charge of the vehicle on the date/time. "No comment" to any further questions, no point in incriminating yourself and a single member of public is not really sufficient evidence for a prosecution.

Perhaps it depends on your area too but it's the Metropolitan Police where I am, and they're far too busy to trawl through hours of CCTV footage, to find evidence like this unless the pedestrian was actually hurt.

But you're right, it won't do any harm to report it.

Something similar happened to me with a driver aggressively revving and beeping as I crossed the road (at a perfectly reasonable pace) at a zebra crossing. I got the number plate and rang the police and they came and took some details from me. Without any evidence they clearly couldn't prosecute however they said they would go and have a stern word with the driver, carefully check the roadworthiness of his vehicle and make sure all his documentation is in order. Just to let him know that his actions did not go unnoticed, cause him some inconvenience, and just possibly make him think twice before doing something similar in future.

It's worth a try but you might get a frustrating response from the police. This happened to me last year - a car went through a red light at about 40mph when the green man was showing. If DP hadn't held me back, I could have been killed. He got the reg and we reported it to the police but they said they couldn't do anything as there was no CCTV. Frustrating!

I live near a crossing like that Manager and use it several times a day. This sort of thing happens daily.
