AIBU?

AIBU to think this was cheeky? (Train and makeup related)

Dh and I were on a packed commuter train this morning - standing room only. DH opened his newspaper to read- a girl sitting on a seat to the left asked him "would you mind closing your paper as I'm doing my make up and your blocking my light". DH just did it as he didn't really know what to say, and I was out of earshot so sort of missed it. AIBU to be astounded at the cheek??

I think 'Tough titty' would have been the correct response in those circumstances.

Haha! Yeah that's cheeky.

Why didn't he just move it down towards his lap a bit?

worra he was standing and it was really really packed- so sort of had the paper at waist height (literally the only place to hold it in between packed in commuters)

Oh, in that case he should have rolled it up and smacked her across the nose with it Grin

"No, it's a screen as I don't want to look at you". I do my make up on the train and I'd never dream of being so rude!

Sounded like she asked nicely!

"You should have woke up earlier if you wanted the perfect ambience in which to apply your slap, you cheeky mare"

Carry on reading unapologetically.

😂😂 your oh is very polite.

Your dh is too polite. I'd have simply replied
Tough. You should have got your butt out of your pit earlier to give you time to do your makeup.

esmerelda to be fair he said she did ask nicely, but I still think it's bloody cheeky- luckily I didn't hear as I think my response would have been- "oh if it's blocking your light- why don't you stand up here where I am (in between two armpits) and I'll take your seat"

I'd have have made a sympathetic face and said "I don't think the light is your problem". Preferably while patting her kindly on the hand.

Or I may have turned on the torch on my phone- aimed it her and said "is that better light?"

I am amazed he had room to open a newspaper to read it, while you were stuffed inbetween armpits..

I was standing in a packed tube carriage once - as in absolutely crammed. A woman sitting near me reading her kindle tapped me on the shoulder to say my bag had knocked her kindle and she was trying to read. I apologised profusely and offered to swap places if that would be more comfortable for her. She declined the offer.

In other words no YANBU. 'I need to read the paper in my seat. You look lovely in that light though'

reading a newspaper on a packed commuter train is vair knobbish.

I bet he tilts it so no one else can read it either.

I really dislike people putting on their make up on the train. It feels like you are intruding on their private, intimate space somehow even though it's quite the opposite.

Why is this a problem? Even with buckets of makeup it would have been 15 minutes max. I don't see why it's cheeky for her ask.

He should have made a hole in one side to let the light through - perhaps through the sports pages which are boring IMO.

A ticket on a train doesn't guarantee you a seat, so expecting daylight too is just being grabby.

drinkyourmilk sorry what??? He should have not read his paper for fifteen minutes while she decided to "contour" her face in the correct light?? (Which actually he did, but I wouldn't have)

I loathe people that do their make up on public transport. Get ready at home - it takes five minutes!! You are not being unreasonable

Oh and Im not a fan of doing make up on the train- have had one too many incident of being covered in other people's face powder/bronzer whatever

drinkyourmilk because her need to paint her face doesn't trump his need to read the paper.

I used to occasionally take the same train as a woman who would give herself a full manicure. I admire the time efficiency of it but could do without bail filings over my bag or a varnish induced headache at 6:30am.

I'm just happy someone else is on board with buying/supporting physical newspapers (unless it was a rag he was reading Wink) . Cheeky, but if she was polite asking you can't blame her for trying I guessGrin
