To be disgusted by fellow passengers on bus?

I will say I am not racist and I'm sorry if any of this upsets other people, this behaviour really upset me. I am white, as is my dh and dd to add to the context. Today is my dds 1st birthday. Dh is ill so our plans had to be cancelled so I decided to get the bus from the small town I live in to the next town across to do some shopping etc. On the bus home there was a lovely older lady, wearing a sari, I can only assume she's hindu because of the red dot she had on her forehead. She was making a fuss of my DD, talking to her, pulling faces as you do to babies and chatting to me. She seemed really really nice and was telling me about her own grandchild. As people got on and off at various stops I noticed people where avoiding her, the seats directly behind us and across the aisle from us where empty and even when the bus was full no-one would sit down on those seats. People were looking at us and giving me funny looks for talking to her. As the lady got off at her stop a teenager ran down the bus passed her and shouted "p**i c *t at her then ran off the bus. I couldn't believe the way she was being treated. I thought where I lived was accepting and multicultural but obviously not. AIBU to be disgusted at my fellow passengers attitudes towards this lady?
