AIBU?

AIBU to want to not be friends because she's so stupid

I have a 'friend' who I met through previous job which tbh I cannot stand purely for the fact she is completely and utterly thick. I know this sounds really harsh but everytime I see her she says something else and I just get so irritated. It wouldn't be so bad but she clearly has no idea and can be quite outspoken at times (even when she is completely wrong). I would give examples of stupid things she has thought or said but it would probably get me found out but for one a couple of days after the referendum I expressed my view about it and she said 'what is it' like she genuinely had no idea what it was, didn't know what the eu was, didn't know people were voting..then went on to say 'oh well I probably would have voted such and such (opposite to me)'. I try to be polite but I just want to scream at her. She contacts me at least twice a week to meet and I don't know how to stop..

YANBU, I don't want to be friend with people that irritate me no matter the reason.

Do you share any interests?

I've got 'friends' that I can't have some types of conversations with, but will meet up to do specific things with.

YABU for calling someone thick. If you don't want to be her friend then don't be her friend.

Yanbu. If she's thick then she's thick. Just don't say it to her face Wink and if that's what irritates you about her then fair enough.
Do you find that the convo dries up really quickly? I find this when I go to playgroups with some mums who are generally a bit blank.

She isn't your friend is she as you don't like her. Why have you continued to have contact?

YABU for calling someone thick. Why are you friends with someone you feel is not as intelligent as yourself

Report
NarkyKnockers · 28/06/2016 12:35

Yabu. If someone is 'thick' that just means they don't have the advantage you have had. Either biologically in terms of their capacity to learn and understand things or socially and culturally in terms of what they have been exposed to. Not a reason to avoid someone imo. She may be 'thick' but she is willing to give someone different to herself a chance which means she is more open minded than you!

I tried really hard to be friends with the mother of a classmate of ds1, because she really wants to be my friend and it felt rude not to at least try to reciprocate. I'm giving up though. She's ignorant, prejudiced, annoying and a gossip. I feel much better admitting to myself that I cannot bloody stand her! It's fine to dislike people, OP. I know as kids we - especially girls- are taught to get on with everyone, but it's not possible. Some people are just not compatible!

You are the thick one for staying' friends'

Well "thick" is being a bit harsh, but you don't have to be friends with people if you don't want to.
Just be permanently busy when she contacts you .

You're not actually friends though. Distance yourself and then drop contact.

Biscuit tbh I hope you do get found out so that poor woman can see the type of person she thinks is a friend. Just stop contacting her, and ffs stop being such a bitch. Just because someone isn't as intelligent as you, or has a different opinion, or doesn't pay as much attention to the world about them as others it doesn't mean they're thick.

I have a friend who still earnestly believes the zoo near us has woolly mammoths.

it hasn't even got elephants. I think she saw a camel and got confused.

I love her though, bless her.

You are being cruel and unkind in continuing this 'friendship' tbh.

Wtf? Are we only supposed to be friends with people with the same number of IQ points then? I thought friendship was more about common interests and values.

Still, if my very intelligent physicist friend thinks I'm as intelligent as he is then I'm chuffed to bits Smile.

Is she nice though? Because that's my criteria for friendship. You probably wouldn't be my friend.

Just because someone is "thick" doesn't make them a bad person, perhaps they have redeeming features like being fun or kind.

Won't it be nice if the zoo does have woolly mammoths though? >

You allude to her as 'a friend', who you 'can't stand........because she's absolutely and utterly thick'
Some bloody friend you must be 😳

Do her a huge favour and drop the pretence that she's a 'friend '.

Some people have a very strange definition of "friend". Someone you know but do not actually like, is not your friend. Personally I would use the term, "annoying acquaintance".

Yanbu. I have a friend who is currently training to be a teacher and it is terrifying how lacking in intelligence she is. I find her exhausting and she doesn't have any redeeming qualities so I just don't contact her.

Why are you asking? Surely your superior intelligence gives you the understanding that you don't have to be friends with someone you don't like/look down on?

You didn't realise? Oh.
