to think that Nicola Sturgeon is a liar

She has said 'Holyrood could veto Brexit'

www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-36633244

However, the Scotland Act 1998, from which all her powers are derived, makes it clear that foreign affairs, including, explicitly, relations with the EU, is not something over which the Scottish Parliament has any authority.

She says ' would there have to be a legislative consent motion' (i.e. a motion accepting UK legislation in a devolved area to be valid in Scotland). The answer is no, as foreign relations are not devolved.

She obviously knows this, why is she lying?

If you read the report on the process of withdrawing from the EU, you'll see that Scottish Parliament has to consent to this ...

She's not lying. And we're currently in a situation without precedent. ATM she's the only one protecting the interest of the electorate, unlike Cameron who has basically fucked off and left everyone to flounder.

She's just a nasty bully and troll.

what is there to veto? the westminster government initiates article 50 and 2 years later we are gone! Scotland can do whatever they want but the EU will have cut ties with the UK so, she is lying.

What's concerning is that she doesn't want Scotland to be forced out of EU against theirby England and Wales but is happy to force us to stay against our will.

That's ok, I'm sure the Leave campaign factored in the legislative consent requirements for devolved administrations as part of their detailed and well thought through plans. Right, Boris? Boris? Boris... are you there?

their will

Report
mamamea · 26/06/2016 12:21

She has no power to stop Article 50 being invoked. Once that is invoked, the UK will leave the EU.

There is very plainly, no 'veto'.

What Paragraph 70 is discussing is the primacy of EU law in Scotland. Although that is an issue in relation to Brexit, it does not mean that Scotland can refuse to withdraw from the EU.

The consent that is being referred to is consent to amend the Scotland Act 1998. It is not consent to leave the EU.

Gosh! Imagine if she did.

Politics has never been so dramatic. Despite my strong feelings in one direction, I am certainly agog at all the drama.

NS's job is to protect Scotland's interests, she has never once said that she wants to force England & Wales to stay

To call someone a liar in this way for simply voicing her opinion in the legalities involved is really coarse and indicative of the fairly low level politics in the UK has stooped.

Her job is to investigate all the avenues available to her to safeguard her country and majority of her citizens who voted to remain.

Sturgeon is the only politician right now who seems to have a clue (or a plan)

I'm not Scottish and have never given her a second thought really but calling her a liar!!?? For real! Do you do that in real life?

Who would she send her veto to, The European court of human rights?

Lol can you imagine that trial Scotland v England, Judge rules England cannot leave EU and we are to be subsumed by Germany.

She has to do the best for Scotland

The gap between Leave and Remain in Scotland is much wider than the rest of the UK

I'm quite sure if there's any way to secure the interests of the Scottish Electorate who voted then she will

If there's a chance she can block it legally, she absolutely must make a legal argument - doesn't mean she will win the argument but she has a duty to make a legal argument if possible

Pissed off with people who are pissed off with lots of EU threads. What do you expect? Biggest political event of our time. It's huge.

It needs and warrants discussion.

Sturgeon's mandate is to look after the interests of the Scottish people. That is what she is doing. Her response was inevitable.

Brexiters would have known this would happen - due to doing research prior to the vote right?

There is no precedent. She's not lying. Just investigating all possibilities. Denmark is in the EU while Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not despite being ruled by Denmark.

I dislike Sturgeon only marginally less than I dislike Farage but she has to get credit for this.

OMG the European Convention on Human Rights is not part of the EU, but the Council of Europe. Theta is a completely different thing and pre-dates the EU. We are still subject to it whether we leave the EU or not. Don't you understand yet, Leavers? You know absolutely nothing about the things you're talking about.
